2.5

You know, I was enjoying this. I thought it was really cute, and handled romance tropes in an interesting way so as not to make me bored. At face value, and without much critical analysis, this was the romantic fluff I needed amidst some really heavy reads and I had a decent time.

However…

The sex scenes ultimately felt cringey, and as soon as I saw the #girlboss ending coming I got really taken out. Also… what is this trope of having earth shattering (literally) sex in your childhood bedroom that conveniently looks exactly the same as when you were a child? It feels really strange to me, and I’ve seen it quite a bit in rom coms? I felt the last 100 pages dragged on forever, and could have been seriously condensed to make a crisper ending.

All in all, this was not horrible, but turned out to be not for me.

The story and characters started out well but proceeded to get incredibly cringe because of the dialogue and immature writing. It started to feel reminiscent of a very badly written fan fiction

No just no. The storyline was idiotic the sex scenes were awkward and holding on to something from prom? Really be an adult. just all around a no for me.

It was ok

Characters are decent, story is ok. Warning: if you don't like Marvel or the miscommunication trope then I'd steer clear.

This book was so freaking cute, I didn’t want it to end. I love Daisy’s family so much. There were so many funny moments throughout this book, along with some heavy topics thrown in as well — DV, addiction, feelings of inadequacy, sibling rivalry — and it never felt gratuitous or out of place. I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

If you’re looking for a romance novel sans the emotional rollercoaster most love stories have, this is your stop. Desai gives the reader exactly what they crave when they crave it. No frills or annoying delays. I love an author who understands literary timing and keeps you wanting more and avoids plot lulls.

My only gripe was that there are a few instances where the cheese is laid on super thick. Especially in the beginning, the dialogue between the characters is corny and unrealistic. It felt like a Hallmark movie. Thankfully, this wears off as the characters develop (but don’t expect much of an arc either).

Ultimately, due to the warm, fuzzy, and lighthearted nature of the book, it’s just the kind of feel good story you need for a pick me up during a pandemmy.

Pretty standard contemporary romance. I loved the characters and the setting. The cringe parts were just cringey enough to be so and just little enough to not completely ruin the book. The main characters are totally swoon-worthy.
Had no idea it's a series so I'll have to check out the other two.

Crying score: none

First off, I hated the third person POV. I actively avoid third person POVs at all cost, but that's just a personal thing, and is not the reason why I rated this book so low. The main characters, despite being over 30 years old, acted so extremely juvenile. This book read as a YA romance with so much spice, but all of the spicy scenes were so poorly written. The plot was alright, but it was very predictable to me. It took me a long time (in my opinion) to finish this, and if I could ever bring myself to DNF anything, this would've been the one.
