This book was a poor version of The Fault in Our Stars. I wanted to stab Mia the entire time. I still want to stab her. She has TERMINAL LEG CANCER, and her she is complaining about losing half of her leg so she DOESN'T DIE, because it HuRts HeR RePuTaTiOn!
Oh NO!!
Meanwhile, Zac has an actual problem over here with bone marrow that is killing him slowly and has lost all of his hair and IS DYING.
Read the Fault in Our Stars.
Don't read this book.

Thank you to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group for allowing me early access to this title.

3 1/2 stars really.

Likes / Loves:
I loved Zac. Everyone should have a friend like him. (personality not dying of cancer) I loved his sister Bec too. They are just awesome people.

Dislikes:
I don't really have any that stick out. While it does have more language than some might care for, it didn't seem to be put in there just to put it in there.

It only gets 3 1/2 stars though because I felt parts of it only scratched the surface of the friendship between Zac and Mia. But then, maybe I wanted more out of it.

I imagine books with harder, emotional subject matter can be difficult to write, this one scratches the surface and keeps it a bit more 'fluffy' than it could be.

Interesting to read though.

Thanks to HMH Books for Young Readers for early access to this title. - I won an ARC through Goodreads! Yay!

This was ok - not my favorite book I've read recently, but definitely worth finishing. I'm sorry to say I never did warm up to Mia. She struck me as just a spoiled brat. I really liked Zac's character, and his family. I think, however, my rating this time is based more on the ending. It's as if the author tried to throw these deep, meaningful nuances in at the last minute, without fully grounding them in the book as a whole. This book is being compared to "[b:The Fault in Our Stars|11870085|The Fault in Our Stars|John Green|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1360206420s/11870085.jpg|16827462]" and "[b:Eleanor & Park|15745753|Eleanor & Park|Rainbow Rowell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1341952742s/15745753.jpg|17225055]." Sadly, while it touches on themes from those works, "Zac & Mia" falls short on the publisher's hype. I think this is a good book for teens - with a note that there is a lot of language in the book - but other books have done a better job with the same themes and situations.

This book has been compared many times to The Fault in Our Stars, and although it deals with a similar kind of situation I liked it for different reasons. Zac and Mia seemed more like real teenagers to me. Mia is not a character you're going to like through much of the story, but I think her anger at the world is a pretty accurate portrayal of the way many teenage girls would feel and act if they were faced with cancer. Her growth and change is easy to see when she interacts with her school friends later in the story. Zac deals with his own cancer in different ways throughout the story, and that roller coaster of emotions is incredibly believable to me. I also felt the alternating points of view of Zac and Mia added additional depth to the story. I adjusted to reading Zac's point of view in the beginning, appreciated the addition of Mia's point of view in the middle, and then felt a loss when it switched to just Mia's point of view in the third part. Yet, that loss is an important part of what is happening to both characters.

On a different note, I haven’t read many stories that are set in Australia, and I liked that about this book as well. Through much of it, a city is a city to me, but I loved the Good Olive farm with the little bits of extra detail about the work of caring for the trees and animals.

* I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and HMH Books for Young Readers for an honest review.
