This series just gets better as we have more growth and development in the characters and their relationships as well as the continuing and intensifying drama that is happening with the overall series plot. *To be read as a part of the series and in order.*
The threat of the Red Cloth intensifies and brings dramatic scenes with action, pain and interesting developments for everyone involved. Without knowing where the threat is going to come from , it leaves them searching helplessly for clues but they have this along with the constant tears and fights with the taragons that come through. There are a couple of scenes that brought a tear to my eye with the emotion that I felt coming from those involved. Having read these characters through five books now (including novellas), you can feel how strong their bonds are and just how deep they go, especially with Madeo and Jude.
Mads and Cosmo are constantly strengthening their relationship but here, we also see it happening with others. Mads and Charlie spend quality time together, as well as with the children that were brought into the pride after tragedy in the previous book. Cosmo and Jude are also working to build something together, knowing that each is now a necessary and permanent part of Mads's life. I also like how their building their friendship with others they work with, Harriet, Ash and his team.
This is a fantastic addition to the series! I am a huge fan of this author's and always enjoy and am in awe of the world that she is able to create along with the imagination of the plot, characters and details throughout the whole series. A must read for fans of her's and of fantasy romance.
**Audio review**
Zachary Zaba again brings a fantastic narrative to this much loved series. The voices he provides for all of the characters fit their personalities, I especially love Mads with his ability to be the snarkiest snark but quickly switching to caring for those important to him. The intensity of some of the scenes comes across really well as the voice draws me even more into the story, keeping me gripped to everything going on throughout.

"A Purpose That Restores Us" by Michele Notaro is a rollercoaster ride of action and emotion. There is so much action and so many nerve-wracking events that it can feel a bit overwhelming, but those parts are tempered by the times the pride is together and living their lives outside of their jobs. They bring new people into their fold as well as gain new allies and discover more villains. Mads and Cos are still growing together. Mads is still discovering how to be ok with being loved and accepted and Cos is still not pushing and letting Mads move at his own pace. It's quite lovely. The very end though? That is everything.

This audiobook has a new narrator, and it took a bit to be comfortable with the change. But, Zachary Zaba did a good job. He is easy to listen to and brings the world and characters to life.

I received a free copy of the audiobook and this is my honest opinion.

I enjoyed the book but I have some difficulties to rate. I feel like it was a transitional book only because of the change of narrator. I had to get use to it and the characters' new voices (Charlie's voice got deeper!) and even if I did and ended up liking the new narrator, I'm not sure if the rating I settled on is because of the story, the narrator or both. I guess we'll see with the next book.

lots of action and peril

This world is not for the faint of heart. So much danger from multiple sources if you’re a Magi or even a shifter. I loved the pride though, and their love for each other. I cried several times in this book but it ends on a very happy note. Mads is such a prickly man, it was great to see his softer side.

I’m honestly so thrilled by the level of action/adventure/found family/hurt/comfort/supernatural intensity that I’m finding in this series. The world itself is incredibly dangerous for the main characters and Michele doesn’t ever have them all escaping unscathed, which makes it so realistic. And she allows us to have the comfort after the hurt, whether simply taking the time to write it, or switching POVs so we don’t suddenly miss out on half of the story. It’s incredible to read. And there are threads throughout the whole series that keep developing which are really neat to follow! I love it!

Would I go back in time and still read this book, knowing what I know now?
Absolutely. So much yes.

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: I keep getting a chance to enjoy the same characters I’ve come to love from the previous books, as well as some new people who arrive that end up being just as lovely. I nearly squealed when I noticed two instances where Michele actually described people! Granted, one of them was a reiteration of the color of Jude’s hair, but she actually described Ash and that was really exciting to read. I think what I appreciate the most about the characters is getting the chance to see the flip side to the main ones. For example, its clear just how much trauma Mads and Jude have, and yet, to see them turn around and take what they’ve learned from that trauma to ensure that those they care about don’t incur their own, even on much smaller scales? It’s beautiful to read. So many of these pieces could become a conflict for a book, but that isn’t what’s important here. The importance is the team, their growth and love and working together and I LOVE this so so much.

PLOT: The plot on this one is slightly slower, in my opinion, than the previous book. I think that’s partly because we have a side plot occurring that’s a little more political and Michele takes the time to show that to us, rather than tell. It’s just borderline too much, but she never goes over! There are plenty of moments where we get to pause and catch up and breath, especially because there are some incredibly intense moments that occur. She somehow weaves in the high stakes while also making sure I know somehow, that everything is going to turn out alright. Because of that, I can invest fully and completely and ‘feel all the feelZ’, which isn’t easy to achieve!

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

4 out of 5/high. I’m definitely completely immersed in this world. I think it’s really neat and there’s always more to find out.

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

99%. Wow, the climax and ending of this one. Wow. But the denouement is there, my beautiful, glorious denouement. And for the middle book of a series, the events of this major conflict are wrapped up as well. I only take off 1% because the epilogue is weirdly so far into the future that it felt too far to be believable, given how fast things have occurred in the timeline of the first three books. Maybe this time I’ll read the companion pieces and they’ll have some of that information.
