My poor rating is not for the story , Tara's journey is admirable... but the storytelling, I thought the sentences were all over the place.
My favorite part from the book:
"My life was narrated for me by others. Their voices were forceful, empathic, absolute. It had never occurred to me that my voice might be as strong as theirs."

wow!! this was a very impactful read. i have so much to think about. this gave me more empathy for folks that grow up in extreme versions of religion (among other beliefs.) it’s so easy to criticize our education system in the states (and everywhere) and while that is valid, it’s also really beautiful to see how it can give freedom to people. i love how tara wrote what she thought and felt in each moment without apologizing for it or writing asides that she is embarrassed or something for thinking such things- just great writing overall!!
-i do think it dragged on too long but i was glad i finished it-

Really fascinating story from a perspective that we don't often hear about. Growing up as a survivalist Mormon and not going to school until 17 years old then going on to earn an Ivy League PHD. Wow.
Written as a "confessional" style book, I went down a rabbit hole with this one. Looking into all of her family members, her mom's oil business, photos of her dad, her brother "Shawn" etc. Her mom wrote a book called Educating, apparently trying to clap back at Tara's claims, but based on the goodread reviews, it's a streaming pile of crap and lies. Will skip.
About 2 hours too long, I made a big push to finish this one. Wouldn't recommend to everyone, but if the synopsis grabs your attention, I say give it a read. Really interesting, especially as someone who grew up in a "mainstream" Mormon family, even bordering on "gentile."
