This was so creative! Asano’s unique artistic liberties were really captivating to me, almost more so than the story itself (which was also wonderful). Having the main character Punpun drawn like he was scribbled together by a child, while all of the side characters were gorgeously detailed is such a cool choice in my opinion!
Punpun’s journey felt almost nostalgic, given how it’s so reminiscent of an actual middle schooler’s life. Witnessing him tackle the confusion of first loves and pure joy alongside the occasional unexplainable sadness was really comforting. I loved the simplicity of this story as it tackled the complexities of humanity!! A great start to this series :)

Beautiful illustration, story was dark and unredemptive. Which yes, is the point, but didn’t love it.
I enjoyed how the author conveys emotions and punpun suppression of memories. Although at first I wasn’t too into the artistic style, but as I continued yo read it more. I can understand why the mangaka uses certain plot devices. I did know there were certain upsetting topics that would be included. So it didn’t alarm me to much. I like that the element of dreaming and religion are key points within an average kid perspective within the manga as they are fundamental factors on how children comprehend situations. We have a reality friend of punpun that lays it out how it is, drawing and dream like friend that imaginative in all aspects but gets stricken but reality by his friend and punpun that uses religion as shelter that there is hope and safety within horrific situations. Overall I’d consider a literature manga piece for those who like delving in between the lines. I wouldn’t recommend to everyone as others may not like that art style or just simply rather have things laid right in front of them. So really i recommend for those who enjoy media literacy to understand why each character has certain ways to cope with situations. And not read goodnight punpun simply cause it’s hyped cause it does has upsetting themes and some certain plot points that you need read in between the lines.
