I think that had I known what this book was really about I would’ve been more prepared going into it. I thought we were getting a friends to lovers romance, with a friend group twist, but it was a book about grief and perceptions of the people we think we know. I wish we had longer with the departed before we were meant to experience grief because I didn’t feel connected at all to the sadness of the whole thing, and it felt more like a plot device to set the story in motion than a deep dive into how we handle loss as people. However, I enjoyed the read and I’d definitely read from this author again.

When I picked this one up I thought I was going to be reading another run of the mill contemporary romance novels that would make me feel all gooey inside. Well I was wrong.

Just last night is about a group of close knit friends who have known each other since six form. They see each other all the time and go to a pub quiz once a week.

That is until tragedy strikes.

The novel is more about loss of a loved one and how people deal with that sudden loss in their own way; of love and of what we think bring in love is compared to actually being in love and about not prejudging people and taking them for who they really are. Doing that you can fondly find some happiness and perhaps true love yourself.

I disliked this book. The main characters are a group of 35-year-olds who act like a group of middle school bullies. However, I think the descriptions of grief were very well done.

Just Last Night is marketed, at least in part, as a romance, but this book is an emotional journey through loss, grief, love, and heartbreak, from the lenses of friendship, family, and intimate relationships, all at once. Highly recommend.

This definitely was a nice and fun read. The story was completely different than what I expected it to be from the blurb. But I can‘t exactly hate that about the book. I did not anticipate the book being about friendship more than romance, but it suits the story. The author‘s writing is really clever and I like the way all the drama and conflicts got resolved. Also, glad Eve ended up with the guy she did and not with
Ed.
