This felt like two separate books that didn’t fully connect. Though I could see some of the developments coming, it felt like the book was trying to do too many things and thus wasn’t realistic to me. There were some scenes I definitely enjoyed, but overall not a favorite.

I wasn't feeling this. So much so that I actually decided to start at the end and then work my way backwards, but that only got me so far.

It's not the author - I've read from her before and enjoyed her prior work.

It may have to do with the content? I dunno, I guess I'm not really in the mood for low stakes romantic drama within a friend group, especially since one of them isn't even on the earthly plane anymore.

It's definitely mood related. I may pick it up again at a later date, but it's just not happening right now.

Just Last Night has all the feels, and is altogether bittersweet.
Eve has had a long time crush on best guy friend Ed. She is devastated when Ed becomes engaged to his girlfriend, though further devastation awaits with the sudden loss of a close loved one.
Details learned of the lost friend after death complicate Eve's grieving process, as well as the presence of associated family issues.
Loss of a friend, loss of relationships, loss of faculties and control construct the basis of Just Last Night.
I went into this one fairly blind and enjoyed not only the depth of storyline, but also the wit and smart dialogue throughout. And the Twin Peaks references were a pure bonus.
This is my first Mhairi McFarlane book (though I own two others!) and I now understand why she has so many dedicated fans. She's got this down pat. Recommended!

This book gave me all the feels within less than 24 hours of plowing through it. Oh my!
This book is not just a book about romantic love, but also about platonic love between friends. And about loss and grief.
I would’ve loved to read more about Eve and Fin as a couple, because I did fall in love with them.

Edit: thinking more about it, I gotta admit that the ending was a bit too rushed for me. Some much happened on the last 50 pages, that I wish the book would’ve been a bit longer.

Mhairi McFarlane is my favorite romance writer but her last book is by far my favorite book that she’s written.
It’s the type of rare staying-up-late-at-night-because-you-can’t-stop-reading romance.
It’s not at all what I would’ve expected from reading the title and the synopsis and seeing the cover but in the absolute best way. It’s about friendship and family and grief much more than it is about romance (but I love the romance as well).
Would highly recommend!
