From reading the summary, you know what's coming. Yet, reading about the hope Winter has of seeing Spencer again makes you sort of hope that she will see him, and you sort of forget what we already know what's going to happen. And when he dies and Winter finds out, I was every bit as heartbroken as she was.
I really liked Winter, and she reminded me of myself sometimes. I could easily put myself in her shoes and the author's way of expressing her emotions really had me feeling the pain with her. Her best friend Lindsay is also a great character and the way she struggled with her problems and the death of Spencer added so much to the book and to her and Winter's friendship. And what can I say about Jesse? I loved him. I thought he was a great, sweet and very patient guy who cared about Winter and who really helped her.
So obviously after reading only the first few pages, I was hooked to the story and I wanted to keep reading and not stop. So I did. I read this book in a few hours and I definitely recommend you to pick it up. It is a heartbreaking, yet hopeful story about young love, pain and moving on. It is really a great book you shouldn't miss out on.

This book broke my heart too. I thought that I wouldn't get emotionally detached to Spencer, because he practically wasn't in the book, but boy did I cry throughout the first hundred pages!
I really enjoyed this one, it had heartache and longing in it but at the same time it gave you hope that life indeed goes on and you can find love in the most unexpected places.

I hadn't read Mills first young adult novel, but I got sent this one for review. I am so happy that I did, because this book was amazing. I had heard many great things about this book and had very high expectations for it when I started reading it. And let me tell you, those expectations were met and most definitely exceeded. No one can really prepare you for how great this book is.
I have never experienced a loss like the main character has. I can't even fathom what it must be like to experience something like that. Mills writing makes you feel like you can still connect to what the main character is feeling, and the loss she is going through. Throughout the book, you will find yourself greiving with her, recovering with her, and cheering for her.
Mills writing is really extraordinary. From reading this book, I believe she is one of the best young adult authors on the market right now, and I can't wait to pick up her first novel. I definitely recommend this one to everybody. It is sad, and it will make you cry, but it is all worth it.

Summary: Winter Craig couldn’t feel any better. She finally confessed her feelings to her lifelong crush Spencer and they shared their first kiss. But the day after, tragedy strikes. Spencer is killed in a place crash while trying to get his pilot’s license. Everything that Winter knew crumbles before her very eyes. Instead of spending the rest of her senior year blissfully dating Spencer she spends it wandering around trying to make sense of everything. With her best friend Linsday by her side and a certain boy next door who keeps popping up, Winter tries to put back the pieces of her heart.
Rating: 5/5
This book surprised me—in a good way. I have to say that I loved everything about it.
All of the characters Mills created are very complex. At first you get everyone on the surface level, but as the story progresses the reader gets to delve deeper into each character, even the bitchy popular girl. Your perception of each character changes as you learn more about them. I also like that you get the minor character’s stories as well. It doesn’t just focus on the main character’s problems.
I also loved the way that Mills portrayed Winter’s reaction towards the loss of Spencer. In an almost poetic way Mills describes Winter’s struggles to come to terms with the loss of her first love and also to try to move on. The book shows all the heartbreaking emotions that someone goes through when they lose a loved one. All the what-if’s and regrets, all the remembering of good memories, and even all the fears of moving on and forgetting them.
This book broke my heart but it also mended it back together. I would definitely recommended this book!

Let's be honest here, the cover of this book is what initially drew my attention and the setting (Alaska) gave it a sure spot on my to-read list but when it came to actually reading it. I just feel as though something was missing. My instinct is that the author told me more than showed me and I never fully connected with the characters, but I'm not sure if that's really the case. Either way I didn't dislike it but it wasn't particularly awesome either.
