I absolutely gobbled that novella up.

I’m failing to see any connection whatsoever to Elantris, aside from a few mentions of Svorden and the Jindoeese people.

Regardless, I’m actually devastated there isn’t more to this. I want a full trilogy on Shai and her backstory, how she learned forgery and what she got up to after she finished the Emperors soul.

Argh, that was so good.

This novella shows off just how well Sanderson can build a world and tell a story in right around 100 pages. I was drawn in from the very beginning. With how the story played out, he basically set a time limit for himself and the characters of the story. When the 100 days were up, I found myself immensely satisfied with the ending. I hope we see more of this plane in the future of the cosmere.

THIS WAS ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

Die Seele des Königs: 5 Sterne
Legion: 2-3 Sterne

This was such a delight. This is exactly how you write a compelling story about vivid characters. The fantastical elements were discussed for a massive amount of the book, but they weren’t fantasy for its own sake. This was an introspection on what art is and what defines the self. Despite being mostly contained in Shai’s head while she’s imprisoned, the story was perfectly paced. The contemplation of all the different ideas and themes had time to breathe without meandering, and the dialogue was layered, efficient, and engaging. There was more substance in this relatively short story than most full length novels.

I love the idea of attempting to forge someone’s soul from reading diligently about them, entirely without meeting them. The obvious parallel being that Sanderson was writing from the reader’s perspective, piecing together who he is from all the various stories he writes - pieces of his soul.
