I absolutely gobbled that novella up.

I’m failing to see any connection whatsoever to Elantris, aside from a few mentions of Svorden and the Jindoeese people.

Regardless, I’m actually devastated there isn’t more to this. I want a full trilogy on Shai and her backstory, how she learned forgery and what she got up to after she finished the Emperors soul.

Argh, that was so good.

This novella shows off just how well Sanderson can build a world and tell a story in right around 100 pages. I was drawn in from the very beginning. With how the story played out, he basically set a time limit for himself and the characters of the story. When the 100 days were up, I found myself immensely satisfied with the ending. I hope we see more of this plane in the future of the cosmere.

THIS WAS ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

Die Seele des Königs: 5 Sterne
Legion: 2-3 Sterne

This was such a delight. This is exactly how you write a compelling story about vivid characters. The fantastical elements were discussed for a massive amount of the book, but they weren’t fantasy for its own sake. This was an introspection on what art is and what defines the self. Despite being mostly contained in Shai’s head while she’s imprisoned, the story was perfectly paced. The contemplation of all the different ideas and themes had time to breathe without meandering, and the dialogue was layered, efficient, and engaging. There was more substance in this relatively short story than most full length novels.

I love the idea of attempting to forge someone’s soul from reading diligently about them, entirely without meeting them. The obvious parallel being that Sanderson was writing from the reader’s perspective, piecing together who he is from all the various stories he writes - pieces of his soul.

How well do we know each other? How well do we know ourselves? How permanent is our personality, truly? If you could be anyone, who would that be? These are the questions I walked away from this book asking myself. While it is a quick read, it is no less incredible than the rest of Sanderson’s work - that is to say, it is a masterpiece.

Score: 9.5/10

Crazy coming from the middling heights of Elantris to this absolute masterpiece, but it really is like that. Perfectly illustrating how much Sanderson improved as an author over such a short period of time. This story takes place on the same world as Elantris but that's the only similarity, this novella does in less than half the word count what Elantris only dreams of doing.

The character work here is brilliant, and very literally the very soul of this work. Taking place in such a limited setting, the owness is really on the charcters to carry the weight of the reader's interest, and it absolutely delivers. The main character is not only hilariously quippy, but just insanely competent. On top of that she doesn't give off a Mary Sue vibe at all, her skill feels extremely earned and its very satisfying to watch her balance art and subterfuge so deftly.

And of course we have to talk about the magic. Sanderson never ceases to amaze me with how creative he can be with his magic systems, and forgery may just be his best yet. The potential is seemingly unlimited, it almost seems a shame he used it for such a short story. However I can see it coming back into the fold down the road, its too good not to explore deeper. If I wasn't excited for the sequels already, Im foaming at the mouth now.

I usually reccomend Mistborn first to potential Sander fans, but this might be my new reccomendation. It's short, sweet, introspective as all hell and just a great time.
