John Green has always been a deeply empathetic and thoughtful writer, and seeing his point of view turned towards the sick and poor who are so easy to overlook is a powerful experience.

Green carefully balances the harsh, heartbreaking reality of the modern tuberculosis crisis, a situation caused less by the disease itself and more by our global healthcare structure, with an weighed optimism: we can solve this problem if we choose to do so.

So this is the only John Green book I've actually read, which I think is probably something uncommon. But I've seen all of John Green's TikToks and YouTube videos about tuberculosis and it's such a fascinating subject (in a sad way) that I knew I wanted to read this book. This book was really well done, I feel like I learned a lot, and it was deeply moving and impactful. All of the historical and contemporary medical knowledge was very interesting to learn about, but it was also great getting Henry's story throughout the book and putting that personal aspect at the forefront.

On an only tangentially related note, it was great seeing the End TB Now Act mentioned on page 186. This is probably something a lot glanced over but as someone who spent 2 days on Capitol Hill last April, also meeting with Congressional offices to advocate for this crucially important bill, it is something that stuck out to me. Speaking of the End TB Now Act, for anyone curious who might be reading this review: While it did pass the Senate, it did not pass in the House of Representatives (it never even came to a vote on the House floor), and therefore did not become law. Anyway, I could go on a whole tangent about the End TB Now Act, but I'll leave it at that aggravating note (that it didn't become law).

This is an easy 5 stars and a book that I would recommend to absolutely everyone.

I am not sure what compelled me to pick up a book about tuberculosis, but I'm glad I did. This book is about Henry's story as well as an introduction to tuberculosis from the history of discovery to cure and how it disproportionally affects poorer and non-white populations. The writing was accessible and has me wanting to dig into some of the literature mentioned in the Further Reading section.

From our earliest history to 2025, John Green proves once again his mastery of the written word as he sheds light on an illness that most of the first world have forgetten exists. Everything Is Tuberculosis was conversational and so easy to read, you don't even realize you're learning. My heart aches for Henry and the others who have lived with and are still living with this horrifying illness that should have been long since eradicated. I will be searching for ways to take the baton. John has set us on, in his words, a "virtuous cycle," and it's up to us to keep the cycle going.

I love that half of John Green's videos right now are just him connecting the most random and wild things to tuberculosis
