This one was a bit more of a jumble than book 2, a lot going on, but a good cast of characters. I kind of expected the whole finding the treasure thing to be built up a bit more given how much it was discussed, but it was a bit more of a fizzle at the end there.

This book was everything I wanted it to be.
Small town with wacky people - check
Steamy/sweet romance - check
Crazy yet entertaining plot - check

I can't wait for more Whispering Key aka O'Leary of Florida :)

Re-read prior to the release of Off Key.
Loved it just as much as before.

I really enjoyed this MM romance, it starts off with Doc Mason thinking he has a plan for life and everything kind of explodes in his face (not due to any fault of his). In walks Fenn, a confident (outwardly anyway), somewhat cocky younger guy who has Mason thinking maybe his sexuality isn't as figured out as he thought it was. The sexy time is hot and the love story is everything you want to see in a romance. There's not too much angst in this one, which is a nice change for me. I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

Conflicting feelings because on one hand I loved Fenn and Mason and their bantering and their slow progression from being annoyed at the others presence to desperately wanting the other. I loved how Mason got to explore new dreams with Fenn and I liked how Fenn began to open up to Mason even after everything that he went through.

But for some reason I just didn’t find myself very engaged in the story? It’s a pet peeve of mine when books are like “for the next three weeks we did this…” and then tells you what the characters did. I’d rather just read about it and this book was pretty long so I feel like the page time could have been used better?

Also just a personal ick of mine but I hate nicknames. Every time I read Fenn call Mason “Loafers” I couldn’t help but cringe away.

Love Beale though, gonna continue this series so I can see him get his happy ending because he deserves it!!

Sweet, opposites attract romance! I really enjoyed seeing this pair fall in love. I loved the people of the island! Mason and Fenn grew so much as people and even if Fenn was a bit of an idiot and they both needed to communicate more, I understood where both were coming from. It was great that they had family to help them along the way. I’ll definitely continue with the series as I want to see Beale get his HEA

I'm not sure why this book didn't work for me. On paper, it has a number of my favorite romance tropes: a small town with a fish out of water; quirky characters; a fun mystery. But man, this book is a drag. It's honestly just the m/m version of Robyn Carr's Virgin River series - right down to someone lying to bring a medical professional to a small town as a method of growing the town. The characters go past "quirky" and straight into "annoying" territory, and I honestly can't stand the two male leads. And, to rub salt into the wound, the mystery isn't as interesting as it sounds at first blush. It also had the 80% miscommunication trope; the "I'm setting you free" trope; and the "deus ex machina saves the day" trope. All in all, it's not a great read.

I'd tried reading this a while ago and it was a wrong book, wrong time situation. I'm so glad I came back to it, though. And really.. is it possible that I like Whispering Key just a smidge more than O'Leary? Maybe, I mean, being a Floridian myself, it doesn't really surprise me. Anyway, Mason and Fenn were so fun. I adored their snark and banter and can't wait to read more about the island.
