I was not impressed by this book. Probably because I had no patience for the narrator and his superior attitude. He reminds me slightly of the main character from Catcher in the Rye, who also irritated me. If you can stand his whining and self-involved behavior, the story itself is interesting.
I can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to it.
My brother and Kaatie (from whom I stole the book) really didn'tike it. They thought Eggers was too full of himself. I think that's just his humor. I was entertained. This book makes me want to give up my stable life and try something new even if I fail.

Am I missing something? I have heard much praise for this book, and went in with high expectations. This book felt like a long slog through someone’s personal unedited diary, and not in a good way.
On the one hand, I would have loved to read this twenty years ago, when I was going through an eerily similar life situation (suddenly left with two underage siblings to care for--at 24, no less!). On the other hand, back then I had zero patience for the artsy prose that this book starts with. It's an interesting mix of *serious author* writing and late 90s California surfer dude narrative, but once you get into the rhythm it does pull you in. I would have commented something about the persistent feeling of hipster irony (before there were hipsters) if I hadn't read the (unnecessary) appendix. I'll take the author's word for it not being a classic case of the above. All in all, not perhaps what the title promises, but a good read with glimpses of genuine vision.
Terrible. A heartbreakingly boring work of overwhelming ego. This is the only book I've begun in recent memory that I absolutely could not finish. I have a personal rule against not finishing a book once it's begun, but I had to break that rule with this book.
See, I was very put off by the title of the book, but truly I came to think that it actually was a heartbreaking work of staggering genius. [book:You Shall Know Our Velocity] is tied with this one, however.
Ok move on already. Boring stories that go on and on and on and on and on.
I'd give it 4.5 if I could. The title is actually pretty accurate.
I did not realize this was a memoir. I’m not a fan in general but this one was interesting enough to finish
