Sometimes, especially with science fiction novels, you have to suspend your disbelieve or risk over analysing the plot and ruining your enjoyment. Awakened is one such novel.

I loved it right from the first page. It's full on action and suspense from the start. There are monsters, explosions, floods and even political intrigue - it has it all!

My only criticism is that I didn't know it was the first of a trilogy until I got almost to the end and realised a lot of lose ends needed tying up and I was running out of pages to read! I'm already counting down the months until the next installment!

Thank you to Harper Voyager for gifting me a free copy of Awakened!

I hate when two people write a book together because it's impossible to tell which one of them did what. The inexperience is glaringly obvious in this book. Awkward dialogue, segues, and phrasing are everywhere. And whoever edited this book maybe needs to find a new job. There weren't many typos, but there were constant repeated words that an editor should have caught. Everything these creatures did was lightning fast. I've never seen the word lightning so many times in one book.

But despite all those fault (if you can look past them) this was actually a pretty decent boook. Nothing overly original as far as story goes, but it was a good fast paced ride with some decent action and creepy imagery. It was just enough to outweigh the bad stuff.

"The power cut. Total darkness. Glass shattering. So many screams. So many..."

Holy fucking opening. It is described on the back of the book, but I still absolutely loved the subway leaving on its first journey & coming back empty & covered in blood. AMAZING & SO CREEPY.

Obviously I was hooked on the beginning of the book. The short chapters keep everything moving along quickly, and I was dying to know what happened.

In opposition to the ease of the short chapters, there were entirely too many characters. It was difficult to keep everyone straight, and eventually I pretty much gave up on keeping track of who was who.

By the middle of the book, it started to become clear that answers weren't coming anytime soon, and my interest began to fade a bit. I'm not a huge fan of pure action - I need storytelling & suspense to carry it along, and Awakened ends up relying on fight scene after fight scene. If this is your thing, this book is definitely for you. I feel like I spent a lot of time waiting for anything else to happen.

I don't like when storylines are set up & then not explained. I am pretty sure that this was a ploy to get people to purchase the second book (if there is one), and that frustrates me. It's the first book in the series, and it's unfinished since almost nothing was explained. The things that were explained weren't explained that well, and the format for explaining them was not creative.

Awakened started out well enough to be an awesome horror/sci-fi thriller, but more than anything else, it's a political thriller with monsters. I probably would not have picked up this book if that's how I knew it was going to be. I feel like the purpose of this book was to get a TV or book deal - it's fine if that ends up happening, but I want the actual book/story to be the priority.

Thank you to Harper Voyager for sending copies to the NightWorms to review.

I enjoyed about 60% of this. The creatures started out amazing but the politics overwhelmed the story when I just wanted creatures underground going nuts on the swat teams, someone to care about and a show down.
