i was in b&n browsing the shelves just wanting to buy something. I didn’t want to feel the shame of leaving empty handed. When my eyes skimmed each cover my brain caught up to me and noticed her name. I’ve only known her as a candidate and her iconic laugh.
I’m usually not a person who picks up memoirs or reads non fiction too often. But when I tell you she seduced me.. within the first five pages I couldn’t get enough. I felt this need to know more about this intelligent beautiful women. She has a way with words and I don’t think i’ve felt such intensity so quickly towards another one of my fellow human beings.
The way she describes her community growing and the ache of missing your mother. I didn’t know Shyamala but was she a character. She was as tough as nails and charismatic. The way she encouraged her daughters to never back down (never what, never GIVE UP). She would protest, she made sure the girls knew they were black. Often times, non-black poc, are the main perpetrators of anti-blackness and it’s disturbing. When she described her grieving process I felt heartbroken. I can’t even imagine going through such pain.
Kamala is such a gem and her resume is incredibly impressive. I felt a deeper affection towards her after seeing her mention MAJOR issues in our country. Climate change, racism, misogyny, and generally abusive systems. She name dropped and I RESPECT that. I look forward to calling her my president. She met with victims in person and you can feel her passion through the pages.
God bless her mother and I know she is proud!

Energized by current political of the world so I thought I’d give this a read. I was absolutely blown away by Harris’ work. I recall a number of events described in the book but it was interesting to hear about it from a more personal and in depth perspective. Writing style was encouraging, hopeful, and inspiring. Makes me want to chant USA!
