I am a big fan of Newport's ideas and research about studying and focus techniques, but this book just disappoints.
I was looking for some insightful ideas about how to study more efficiently, but instead I've got advice like "Never nap" or "Dress nicely for class". Not the kind of advice I was expecting for what the title promised.
I am rating it one star because of the book's minimalist approach to providing content that is straight to the point, and I didn't have to spend more time reading unnecessary filler words.

Some good tips, a good amount of rambling, and some outdated info. Overall, a somewhat helpful, short read.

This is a reread for me, but after the semester I've had I wanted to see what I could fix for the next one. Newport has useful things to say, as always, some of which I'd forgotten, some of which I'd done (like studying abroad), and some of which I'm not doing (like writing for the newspaper) because I've tried doing similar things (like writing a novel) and it didn't work. That said, super helpful, useful tips that I'm going to be writing down and adding to my list of things to do in the new year.

Definitely useful -- a bit self explanatory but it does what it intends to do.

Short and sweet book. A good amount of tips I already apply to my own life, but also some new techniques too that I hope to use. It's a bit dated with its references, and sometimes a little too aggressive, but I like to take what I need and leave what I don't. A very approachable book that's easy to read through in a day or two, and I think it'd be a good read for rising first-years and sophomores.
