Doctor Sleep

Stephen King

Will always love Stephen King, not many people let alone those as well known are so clearly self-critical in their work. This is one of those King stories that focuses itself on the supernatural and scary, but tethers everything to heartfelt emotion. Seeing Danny grow old essentially fighting the demons he inherited from his father is crushing, but his relationship with Abra (a character I absolutely love) is just so heartwarming. I love Rose the Hat as a villain, and while I did find that the climax got a bit messy, for the most part I really enjoyed how this played narratively.

the ending ruins it. it's tied up too neatly.

This is King's masterful character work, but presented in a very different way. I like it. It really didn't need to be a Shining sequel. Could have even used Danny as more of a cameo. Just because it isn't necessary doesn't make it bad though and it was done well and doesn't feel cheap at all.

When I first read this, I wasn’t a fan. I felt like King didn’t really expand on the original book, and it didn’t quite feel like a sequel. But guess what? After reading it again, I was totally wrong! It’s an amazing book. The characters are so deep and well-written. The story kept me on the edge of my seat. Plus, it paid such a wonderful tribute to the source material.

The first third had me looking behind doors and expecting to see ghostie people, but overall it was just an average read. The end comes pretty quickly but there are definitely some worthy moments in The Shining follow-up.

So scary but so gripping, I could not put it down once I started part 3.

DNF'd at page 303.

This book isn't poorly written or even that bad. It's just that I've been reading this since November, and it's so long. It's so, so long. This story could've been told in less than half its full length. This book feels the need to inform me about every excruciating detail about the characters' lives and what they are doing and when. I've been at this so long that by the time I decided to call it quits, I finished multiple other novels and an indeterminate amount of manga.

I do not hate this book. I greatly respect Stephen King and the amount of writing he puts out year after year. This book was immersive, and I genuinely cared about the characters. There was a level of suspense worrying that Dan was going to fall back into alcoholism at many points throughout the book. I felt like I was peering in on their lives through a hole in the ceiling. But, like a five course meal, there was simply too much. I am metaphorically full to bursting, and my brain is going to pop if I have to read one more page.
