It was fun to see little Danny Torrance again and find out what became of him. This book has plenty of callbacks to [b:The Shining|11588|The Shining (The Shining, #1)|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1353277730i/11588._SY75_.jpg|849585] but the "shining" abilities play a much more prominent role here. Not as good as the original, but sequels rarely are. In particular, some aspects of the True Knot seemed a bit hokey to me, and King himself draws comparisons to vampires on multiple occasions. I'm looking forward to the movie version coming out this November. I always enjoy Stephen King's Author's Notes at the end, which offer insight into his writing process.

It is rare that a sequel is as good as the original, but there are always exceptions, and this is one of them. Doctor Sleep continues the story of Danny Torrence, the little boy of The Shining, and it is as compelling as its predecessor. However, while The Shining was very much a pure horror tale, though mixed with what was perhaps King's unconscious attempts to come to grips with his own alcoholism, Doctor Sleep is so much more. This is a deep book. There is horror, yes, and the True Knot is a horror greater than anything King has managed in quite a while, but there is also a story of Danny's redemption from the lows to which he descended as alcoholism claimed him in the decades after the events at the Overlook. This redemption ultimately leads him to the mentoring and protection of a young girl who shines brighter than he ever did. The result is a beautiful, scary, tender, thought-provoking, well written, and inspiring novel that is a joy to read. If only all sequels were as good...
