A bit of a slog in the beginning for me, but I'm really glad I stuck with it. it was moving, raw, healing, and messy in good ways.

An outstanding retelling of the myth of Circe. I grew up reading the Percy Jackson books so I felt right at home reading this book. The obvious main difference is that all of the themes were dealt with maturely and this was most definitely fore mature audiences. I love how the book showed a theme that may be incomprehensible to us - but it made it work. We felt for a divine being, we see this character become three dimensional and interesting. There are trigger warning scenes in the book, as a warning in itself. This book was a huge insight into independence and what it means to shape your own destiny, despite the challenges.

A recommended read for all of those who love realistic female leads, character growth and Greek mythology.

Greek myth reimagined; amazing storytelling; gods, villains, and heroes

God (or should I say gods...ha ha...) I knew I would love this book after 3 pages, and I was right. The writing drew me in immediately and I loved the adventurous pace and wide cast of characters. I also loved puzzling my knowledge of Greek mythology around the pieces laid out in the book.

I’ve had friends begging me to read this book for upwards of over a year, and I am so glad that I finally did. As someone who has been a fan of Greek mythology since childhood, a good retelling will always hold a special place in my heart, and Madeline Miller consistently knocks it out of the park. For a story about ancient all-powerful gods, Circe’s story is so undeniably human—awful and messy but beautiful in the way that it always comes back together. Not only that, it is such a uniquely well-rounded female perspective that is very rarely shown in literature, let alone Greek mythology. My singular gripe with this novel is the endgame romance (should’ve been Penelope smh), but it is something that I’m willing to overlook for a tale this beautiful. Miller’s writing style feels like a fairytale and the are so many quotes and lessons from this book tug at my heartstrings. It is a treatise on what it is like to fall in love with mortality, and more than that, it is an in-depth look at the trials and tribulations of a broken woman who puts finds herself and puts herself back together all on her own. This is the story Circe deserves.

Circe is a very beautifully written book. A reminder that you can always stand up and rise to be greater and better even if others don’t believe you can. People in Circe’s life, especially men, always defied her and thought she was less then, but in the end proved them all wrong as she learned from her mistakes and grew as a person. Became a whole independent woman, learned how to live on her own and never asked for anyone’s assistance in the process. You can tell she became more mature and confident by the way she stood up for herself in front of her father and other gods. She experienced it all: bullying, heartbreak, sexual assault, loneliness, manipulation… She’s truly an inspiration.

Fantasy is not my favorite genre, but I enjoyed revisiting my college Greek Mythology classes via this story.
