My reading journey in the Discworld have not be in the publishing order. I read all of the Death books first, then Rincewind, the Witches next and the City Watch the last, while also reading the "individual" ones like Small Gods, the Amazing Maurice and such in between.

I had been putting off reading the Tifanny Aching books for a couple of years because Terry Pratchets Discworld ends with her. I wanted to delay as much as possible, the end of the Discworld.

But alas, all good things must come to an end. And the end was beautiful.

A reminder of what we were privileged to have, and hat we have lost.....

This is the final Discworld novel, and that made it difficult for me to start. An uncle gifted me The Colour of Magic half my lifetime ago and I was immediately captivated; I’d often come back to random pages just to enjoy a few paragraphs. As I grew up reading them the books changed too, becoming less straight comic fantasy and more thoughtful. Discworld became an exploration of so many aspects life, and there’s no doubt in my mind I was deeply influenced by that. The exchange between Death and Susan in Hogfather on the importance of fantasies to being human is one of my absolute favourite pieces of writing.

I love being able to see these books on the shelf and remember where they fit into my life; laughing out loud at Carpe Jugulum on the train to uni, reading Mort on a camping trip with my brothers, dad, and grandpa, encouraging my mum to give Pyramids (and Good Omens) a chance, so many more. I’ll always treasure the ones gifted to me on my 18th birthday and when I finished high school by my grandparents, their words written inside.

The Shephard’s Crown isn’t the best of Discworld. As explained by Rob Wilkins in the afterword it wasn’t really finished, and that does show. That doesn’t detract from the parts that were though; the death early on and reactions of old characters hit me hard, as I struggled to see through the tears I felt like I’d lost someone I really knew, and in some sense really had. This was an ending, but it’s not the end. Discworld lives on in me and all the others it’s made laugh, think, cry, rage, and hope through so many wonderful stories.

Thank you, Terry.

FOR I CAN SEE THE BALANCE AND YOU HAVE LEFT THE WORLD MUCH BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT, AND IF YOU ASK ME, said Death, NOBODY COULD DO ANY BETTER THAN THAT...

Good book, but it made me so sad to think he's gone.

This was the perfect ending to Discworld. After being disappointed by Raising Steam I was kind of scared to read this one, especially since it's about Tiffany Aching, my fave. But it felt really right.

And so I finish my 41st and final Terry Pratchett book. The book that the author had not finished fleshing out and polishing before passing away. For an unfinished and frequently flawed book, this is exactly the way this series needs to end. This book early on focuses on the death of a very well loved character, and how those who remain deal with it. This book also introduces a delightful new character who I suspect would have had more substance if Pratchett had more time to work on him.

This swan song is one of the most directly existential in theme of all of the Discworld books: do what you have the ability to do to leave the world better off than it would have been without you.

Pratchett's writing hasn't always been to my taste, or especially appealed to me. His books have been an excellent audio companion on my long road trips the past few years, though (obviously I enjoyed them enough to finish all 41), and there are some real gems in this series, especially near the end (even after the Alzheimers began affecting his writing). I'm happy I read them all.

Gran cierre a una gran saga y que se lee muy rápido, pero que desde ese principio que tiene, te deja mal cuerpo por pensar que ya no va a haber nada nuevo en este universo.
Una lástima.
