A wonderful book highlighting so many achievements by African Americans. A book to read not just during February.

28 Days. One for each day in February, Black History Month. I don't know if the title is meant to be facetious. There are so many figures and moments that define the U.S.'s history, but the author chose to feature 28. Each chapter starts with the "moment" and then offers a bit more information about its central figure.
It is a good little book, but almost all of the moments are well-known. As a teacher, what I look for in these kinds of picture books are hidden figures whose stories are just coming to light. However, I am a middle school teacher now, was I teaching Kindergarten again, this might be a book I'd use.

Such an important read. Many of the 28 events I never learned about in school, so I’m sure my kids didn’t either. We are catching up and reading one event each night.

We use this book in our Preschool classrooms for Black History month every year, and throughout the year if one of the people featured fits with our theme. The kids enjoy the rhyming format and beautiful illustrations and I like that it covers some people we already talk about and some people that we hadn't. I listened to the audiobook through NetGalley and felt it added an extra dimension having things acted out by voice actors.

28 important figures and dates in African American history presented in verse and colorful illustrations, with prose context included on the page.
It's well done, but I was a little disappointed b/c Smith notes that he wanted to get beyond the same old people you have to study in school in February, but most of these folks are pretty familiar. Still, a good starting point for younger kids.

Thanks to NetGalley, Publisher Spotlight Media, and Live Oak Media for the complimentary alc in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. The book is made up of 28 days. Each day has a different narrator and focuses on either a historic figure or historic event in black history. The audio production is really well done with a mix of sound effects and music as appropriate to the events being profiled. It would be a fantastic way to help bring black history to life for preschoolers or early elementary students.
I think the audiobook combined with the picture book would be a great multimedia addition to a classroom.
