A pretty promising first volume. It's pretty great that this whole series spanning over twenty years is still available in its entirety online. I like the steampunk setting, and the signature art style is pretty good.

I am sure I have passed this author's booth at many a local convention and have always meant to read one of these comics. Again I ran across this comic while browsing the local library. I highly recommend giving it a go, if you like the steampunk genre and/or reading female leads.

I read this was back in the day when it was online only, and the nostalgia is making this a fun read.

Oh baby thank you so much for being short. Great story! On a day I was less busy I would've been happy to read a volume twice the size. But I am super tired and have a cover letter to write and three assorted course readings to wade through. I am really reconsidering this book and review a day goal people. Possibly it was overly ambitious. And by ambitious I mean ill thought out. And by ill thought out I mean wow did I ever overestimate my time management abilities.

ANYWAYS

Girl Genius follows the adventures of Agatha Clay, a lab assistant sadly lacking in the Spark, that bit of Mad Genius highly prized in her alternate universe industrial age world. Judging by the mysterious locket of her parents, the references to the lately departed Mad Scientist family Heterodyne, and the bit where the book starts off with some guy telling children a brand new Heterodyne story and flashes to Agatha we can all guess where this is going yes? Yes.

Fun world! I think this is the sort of thing people are talking about when they go on about steampunk. I approve. Looking forward to further long lost Mad Scientific royalty adventures as soon as Agatha works out her past. 3.5 stars

I'm not a huge graphic novel reader but was looking for something for my daughter, who seems to be a reluctant reader. I cannot imagine why. I wish there had been more of this lead-female, strong figure stuff when I was 12. Or maybe it was always around and I just couldn't find it.

Silly fun in this opening of a new series. Lots of world building is this steampunk-y setting, lots of characters to introduce, and a nice mystery that we see immediately that Agatha "Clay" is more than she seems.

The women and men are drawn very sexualized, which doesnt bug me as all look healthy and not starved, the Foglios have always done sex-positive art, and this series establishes itself as so silly and cheerful that I don't take offense but YMMV.

I started reading and found it hard to put down, and immediately started #2 after I finished #1. I like the large size format of the books.

I love this series - it's the perfect blend of weird, funny, and adventure fantasy. It reminds me of Bone, actually, (though for older readers) and THAT is the highest praise I can give a graphic novel. The entire archive is free online, but I'm putting the dead tree versions on my Holiday list anyway. It's worth it!
