This is a reread for me.

I've followed this comic for years, and after a recent con with the Folglio's as guests of honor, I was inspired to go back to the beginning. And I have to say it is a really interesting experience to do so. Kaja said that they had the entire story arc planned before they started writing, and it shows. Without any spoilers, I'll just say that is is fascinating to see what is already there from the outset.

Oh, and Gil is really an obnoxious putz when we first meet him. :)

I’ve been following Girl Genius since it started ~22 years ago with a few years of down time here and there. I forgot how much I enjoy the Steampunkish gaslamp fantasy mad genius of this particular web comic. The first volume is a good intro to Agatha Heterodyne’s young adult years and it gives some necessary context to her ignorance of who she is. Phil Foglio is a wizard with illustration. The use of colors to accentuate the moods and move the story along is spot on. I’m glad I’ve got a few copies signed by both Phil and Kaja. It’s a fast read. It’s got a dash of very wholesome romance, a lot of mad science and just enough steampunk to make an enby’s heart flutter a wee bit.

I read this book by way of the long running web comic. A well imagined and drawn steampunk (sorry, “gaslight fantasy”) story with steam powered robots and mad science, and a protagonist who only slowly comes to realise her engineering prowess.

Fun beginning to a series with awesomely detailed black and white illustrations of steampunk machinery (major props for the hilarious facial expressions on the characters). Can't wait to read more!

I enjoyed it, but later volumes definitely have more weight.

Great fun. I love that they give the girl ADHD to protect her.

Once I got used to the cartoon-ish art, it was much better. Interesting story, and I'll probably read more.

EH. I sort of liked the main character, but it was so campy and kind of weird and I sort of just kept waiting for the porn to start. (Spoiler alert, there is no porn.)

I love this graphic novel. Fabulous female main character, and tons of mad scientists running around, starting a war, reviving old tech, and exploring "how crazy is crazy?" when building awesome walking machines. What's not to love!!
