I enjoyed this book as well, even though parts of this one seemed incredibly predictable and parts totally heartbreaking. The end was quite the thriller…read to see what I mean!

8 of 10 for enjoyment (only because of the ending. I understand it but I still just can’t give it a higher enjoyment rating because of that) and 4.5 of 5 for readability.

I thought this one was less believable than the first two... Especially the love story between the two main characters. So much of the plot seemed forced.

I really enjoyed the 1st 2 books in this series.. I did not enjoy this one. The 1st third was pretty good but then ventured into a couple of characters being constantly whiny... I honestly looked forward to the end just to be done with it

The worst of the series - Miranda is a typical teen know it all. Terrible. Unlikable. Annoying.

It was not right for Miranda to make that choice for Julie. This series had potential but the poor development of characters and plot just ruined it. I'll finish the last book and just donate these later.

Trigger Warnings: natural disasters, confinement, restrictive eating, body horror, death, grief, animal death, ableism, drugging, and murder

I happened to get this off the library waitlist out of order (I haven't read book II yet), but that was fine. This one picks up with the characters from book I: Miranda, her mother, Laura, and her brothers. Told from Miranda's point of view as she writes in her diary, the reader quickly remembers that, while everything was looking up at the end of book I (the family had a source of food), life was still going to be a huge struggle. New characters enter the book, and you get to read about what long-term life without the sun would be like. I was happy to keep reading about Miranda and the characters from book I, and without spoiling everything, I was happy to meet the new characters. This book is even darker than book I, though, because Pfeffer conveys the increasing depression that comes from living without electricity, a clean source of water, or a regular source of protein.

Can't wait to discuss this with everyone!

Trigger warning: main character euthenizes newly disbled girl without her consent.

This book dissapointed me. The first two were gripping and a fun/sad read. This third one had a lot of praying happening as well as a romance that I didnt think made any sense.

Then at the end, a girl becomes paralized and the teenage main character decides for her that she would be better off dead. That's pretty messed up.
challenging dark emotional sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I love these books. I loved seeing these characters again and knowing what happens to them. It's so interesting to see how they deal with life going through the food storage. I loved seeing Miranda go break into houses and find things for her family to use. She really enjoys doing that and I can see why. Then Matt got married to this random girl named Syl and I don't like her. I mean she killed their cat and was kind of a bitch once in a while. She had no right to kill their cat without their knowledge she doesn't belong in that family. The one thing she brought to the story was some knowledge of what the world was like outside this little town. She had to sleep with people for extra food. If this was real things like that would definitely happen. So I felt for her there. And I also liked how she came up with the idea to sacrifice things to the moon goddess. That was cool. I loved it when Mirandas dad came back and brought Alex and Julie. They were from the second book and I loved seeing them again. But Mirandas and Alexs relationship didn't make any sense. I don't understand why they liked each other so much. Their only real reason was they were around the same age. It went from being so annoyed with each other to making out. They had more of a brother sister bond in my opinion. But they had good scenes together like when they broke into one house and found a man who was eaten by his dog. Then they got a bunch of food and stole a van. It was very dark but appropriate for the story. I also liked when they left town to find nuns to take Julie but that didn't work out and they ended up burying one of the nuns. Also the ending was crazy with the twister and Julie lost the ability to move her body. So Miranda killed her knowing that Alex would want her too. And then he came back and now he might eventually find out. For now they're leaving town and finding the safe place. It was such a good ending and makes me excited to read the next one. It was very dark but I feel like that made it more truthful. Anyway definitely 4 stars maybe closer to 5.
