This book is so great. Woodson's words flow so poetically. I love the theme of the book which is that even though we're all different there will be people who will make space for you. Rafael Lopez's illustrations are so beautiful.
Based on a Jacqueline Woodson poem, centering on a Black girl protagonist but flexibly switching to other characters point of view.
A timeless story, sure to be an instant classic, that recognizes how hard it is to be new, how uncomfortable it can feel to be YOU, and yet there are similarities that can be found to connect each and every one of us. Bright and colorful illustrations add depth to the lyrical and touching text; together they illuminate your mind and touch your heart.
This book should be required reading for all children.
Beautiful book. Beautiful encouragement to children, and gorgeous illustrations.
Lyrically writing with equally gorgeous illustrations, this powerful and poignant book is perfect for anyone who has ever felt they are on the outside. A must have for all classrooms and libraries. Highly recommended for grades K and up.
Another book I wish I had when our boys were littles. They are both so painfully shy, and I think this book may have helped them way back when.
This book lives up to its wonderful reputation. I would use it with upper- elementary age students though younger ones who have live through not fitting in may get something from it as well.
