Unfortunately, this couple didn’t quite hit for me like the others. I think it’s down there with Gloam for my least favorite in the series so far. Of course it’s still a four star from me I really enjoyed it! I think the main problem was that I just didn’t really feel their chemistry and the pacing was a bit slow, things got pretty repetitive. It was hard to really feel their relationship when they didn’t actually have that much time together. I think Jugs really didn’t have much personality, I wanted to like him a lot but he just didn’t really pop for me unfortunately :/ stories set in the 80s just also never really work for me, so the references and Jug’s speech were more of a detractor for me unfortunately. I’m really looking forward to Lyri’s story though! I liked him a lot!

Wow, I devoured this series, and I can't emphasize enough how devastating it is to see that the next book doesn't seem to even have a release date. I remember when Soul Eater was first released and poping it on my wishlist, and it fell onto my back, back burner. A new book would pop up every now and then, but I just never actually picked them up. Then the audio books were coming out, and well, here we are.

This has cemented itself into a new comfort series for me. I have no idea what I was expecting, but this series went above and beyond my expectations.

As for Lor itself, I went in apprehensive, not sure if I was going to like this prequel-esque story, and I'm coming out absolutely adoring it. Was it a bit long? Sure, yeah, it probably could have been trimmed down a bit, but at the same time, I was enjoying it so much that it didn't bother me all that much. Lor and Jugs were adorable and romantic, and I adored their romance and story. I loved getting to know Lyri before his book, I loved all the characters here, seeing The Harold before he became The Harold and other little clues and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout. Mayne does such a great job world building, and this world she's created is so good. I also love when we get a duel pov story,  it worked so well in Moth and it was so good here in Lor  that I really hope that she continues on with that structure in the future books in the series.

Even the couple of books I didn't love in this series are still good, I can see myself re-reading them eventually and having a new perspective but for now I think I'm going to start back at the beginning and read my favorites because I'm not ready to let go of this world! I am waiting in anticipation for Lyri and more( gosh, I hope there's more!)

1 Soul Eater(& Wyn) and Moth ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
2 Edin and Lor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
3 Gloam ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4 Rycke ⭐️⭐️⭐️
5 Seraph ⭐️⭐️✨️

This is a huge book... 619pgs, and the start of it was extremely sleepy. It was so sleepy that I'm sorry to say that at 38%, having read almost half of it, I gave up and started skimming.

When things actually started happening the book was at its 60%, so there was no way I would have been able to patiently read 12% more, when I was feeling that the story was stifling. Not only because of the Lor and Jugs slow burn romance, but because Lor hadn't made a great impression on me at the beginning, with how he was handling the council and I found Lyri to be overbearing (which is something that fills me with apprehension about the next book).

Anyways after the 60% the story came alive, but I didn't let up on my skimming, good thing too because things progressed quickly up till a certain point (I'm trying to not spoiler things here) and then they again stagnated, spanning 3 decades, circling again the same issues over and over again along long stretches of pages, interspersed with certain events here and there that heralded significant happenings that we have already seen in previous books and morsels about things to come with the best being Marikhai! Can't wait to read his story and the human that will make him fall!

Despite my skimming, and that is the true sign of what an awesome author Lily Mayne is -even though this story didn't click with me-, the angst hit hard and I was tearing up, the love between Jugs and Lor was palpable and the feeling of found family was just tangible.

I can't wait for the next book, especially with what Lyri told Lor is going on, even though I'm apprehensive when it comes to the Blue Smurf. Maybe Cat mellowed him out a bit.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

I was really looking forward to this book. However, for me at least, it was just way too long. It felt very slow at some points and kinda hard to get through.

I will say I absolutely LOVED all the characters. Even the side characters like Seis and Lilimar were amazing.

I am excited for the next book, especially after seeing so much of Lyri in this book. He was definitely one of my favorites and I can't wait to read more from him.

Review:
I’m just not a fan of himbo stories, and the first half of the book is kind of just that. The second half is where it gets deep and emotional. In particular,
dead or dying partners
really hit me in the gut, so that being the major theme of the second half is what turned my experience of this book around.

This book made me feel a lot of things about what it means to love and be devoted to a partner, and as someone who is actively sacrificing a lot for my spouse’s health and safety, that aspect of this book was really meaningful and validating for me.

I read this over a year after it was published, and I know people have been on pins and needles waiting for the next one. I eagerly join that club!

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4: Great, calling it good doesn’t feel adequate. I really liked it and had a very good time reading it.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌡️ 4.5: (Many descriptive and detailed open door scenes; smut is very prominent and very nearly rivals plot)

Perspective: first
Tense: past
POV: dual
