Honestly the best Novella/Short Story I think I’ve ever read. Someone once said “brevity is the soul of wit” and I’m going to say this fucking novella is fire from start to finish

Picked up from a “Read Banned Books” display at the library! Interesting psychological examination of his characters, which makes sense given the notes about Freud in the introduction.

A potent and powerful short story. Zweig uses the minimum to create maximum effect. This was startling in its emotional resonance, and is the kind of story you could read repeatedly and still come away with new thoughts. The prose is beautiful. I was struck by the way Zweig uses his words, and how little he tells you while showing you the most possible. Just perfect, in every sense.
