I had the opportunity to read this book at my school library, it sparked my interest to read more word-heavy books since I was mainly a comic reader at the time. (I was 13)
If I could read it again for the first time, I would. I’m looking forward to be able to own a copy of this book one day

A real tearjerker that's for sure!
The premise sounded really interesting and I liked how you technically already knew the ending but it somehow felt like a surprise anyway. But you can't question the setting too hard or it will fall apart a little because...how does Death-Cast even work?? It's never explained lmao Magic? Just machine-powered prediction? Does someone have a Death Note? Who knows, not me. So just ignore and bury all your questions and settle in for the ride, which kind of brings me to my main problem. I liked the characters, they are fun, charming, and read like real teenagers having teenager problems which works well to really bring home how unfair it is that they will both die so young. I get how a situation like that would lead to heightened emotions and how an emotional pressure chamber could make two people fall in love really fast. But it just didn't really feel... real? Like Mateo and Rufus come across as great friends! I just couldn't really buy into the insta love and there wasn't that much... romantic development outside of them becoming friends. It gets saved a little by one of the main sentiments explored towards the end being both of them just... wanting more time, to see what they could build, what they could have, which is exactly what I want as well lmao but then they both die at the end.
(I also lowkey wish we got some kind of... time skip to see how the people in their live are dealing/moving on after both of them passed, but that's just me.)

Holy cow, what a story. While it’s centered around young adults, the plot evokes many reflections around showing up for each other, what makes family, and what would you do if you knew today was your last. This story has stayed with me months after reading it.

I love it.

Wow. I was crying throughout the last 30 pages non-stop and I've finally calmed down to be able to write this.
I don't even know why I loved this book so much, I think it was just the perfect time in my life, exactly what I needed, but didn't know I did.
First of all, we all know how this book ends - it's literally in the title, but I was NOT ready for it. I got incredibly attached to Rufus and Mateo and I couldn't believe that was going to be the end - it was too simple, it has to have a twist! But even though I knew what to expect, it hit me mad hard.
I loved the way the book was written with various points of view from random people, and I loved ALL the small details in which they all connect to each other. The whole story is a circle, everything you read and see comes back as a reference later on, which makes everything more real. Talking about being real, I love how the Instagram accounts they cite on the book actually exist, and all the pictures Rufus posts exists too!
Dedication
For those who need a reminder to make every day count.
This book was amazing, it was a very interesting and simple idea that was well told. As I don't know what else to say to convince you to read this, here are a few of my favorite quotes:
My Last Message would be to find your people. And to treat each day like a lifetime.
Entire lives aren't lessons, but there are lessons in lives.
People have their time stamps on how long you should know someone before earning the right to say it, but I wouldn't lie to you no matter how little time we have. People waste time and wait for the right moment and we don't have that luxury. If we had our entire lives ahead of us I bet you'd get tired of me telling you how much I love you because I'm positive that's the path we were heading on. But because we're about to die, I want to say it as many times as I want - I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you.
Maybe it's better to have gotten it right and been happy for one day instead of living a lifetime of wrongs.
But no matter what choices we make - solo or together - our finish line remains the same … No matter how we choose to live, weboth all die at the end.
I've spent years living safely to secure a longer life, and look where that's gotten me. I'm at the finish line but I never ran the race.
...stories can make someone immortal as long as someone else is willing to listen.
Sometimes the truth is a secret you're keeping from yourself because living a lie is easier.
There has to be more to life than just imagining a future for yourself. I can't just wish for the future; I have to take risks to create it.
Okay. This is enough. I think you get it.
Read this book.
