Very mixed pacing - the vast majority of the key plot points are in the last quarter of the book.

I got this book as an ARC. It was wonderful. The settings and protocols of the regency period are in full use in this book, which helps to bring you into the story.

From page one I was caught in this story. Lady Temperance Lattimar is saying good by to her sister, her twin sister. Prudence is heading to Bath with their aunt to attend the Season there so she can find a quiet husband away from her mother's latest scandal. But Temper has decided to ride the scandal out in London, She is determined not marry any way, so a Season and no takers, maybe a minor scandal society will blow out proportions will help, and she'll get her inheritance from her father and go exploring antiques for her father in the world.

Griffinel Newell, second son and member of Parliament who also happens to be a long time family friend of her brothers, steps in to help since no one will sponsor her. He offers to ask his godmother and aunt, Lady Sayleford, a lady no one in Society dares to cross. The Countess agrees with the stipulation that Giff acts as her protector at all functions.

At one point to get out of the Season, and to help Griff who is taking flack from his mother for taking money away from estate (and her) by living in London and being part of Parliament, to a marriage blac, or a marriage of Convenience. He turns her down at the time, thinking that she will change her mind about some young buck. And that with her hoyden ways she really wasn't the political wife he was looking for.

>One young miss is very jealous, and wants Giff for herself. When she realizes he is not in the market for a wife, and disbelieves Temper is not in the market for a husband, she connives to get them caught together in a room, locked from the outside I might add, ruining Temper.

We all know what happens from there, Griff being an Honorable young man. I liked this book a lot. It was a fun read with a spunky heroine who knew what she wanted. A darkness from her past haunted her, and her mother's reputation made things extra hard for her. But she took it in stride and loved her mother. I give this book 4 1/2 stars. If you like Regency Romances you must pick this one up for a wonderful read.

The only real problem I had with book was the fact that it was Earl's Inconvenient Wife. So I knew at some point his brother would die. And since we never hear anything about the brother except how perfect he was back home, you knew it was going to be an unfortunate death. I was of course still sorry when Giff got the news - on his wedding day to Temper - it wasn't a surprise. I did enjoy the book and give it 4 1/2 stars. The title was the only thing that really caught me. Excellent writing, keeping the reader in the era well done, protocols well established and followed through with. Well done, Ms. Justiss. Going to get the first book in the series now.

The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife by Julia Justiss is a 2019 Harlequin Historical publication.

A lovely and tender' friends to lovers' story-

Temperance is happy her twin sister has found her true love and a husband. But that is not the life for her. No, Temperance wants desperately to defy conventions and become a world traveler. Her father, however, will not release her dowry until she has gone through with at least one ‘season’.

Due to her mother's scandalous reputation, easing Temper into society might prove tricky. Coming to her rescue is an old friend of her brother’s, Gifford Newell.

Gifford enlists the help of the influential Lady Sayleford to sponsor Temperance. She agrees, but with one stipulation-

Gifford must attend all the various dances and functions with Temperance to protect her from any backlash.

Neither Gifford or Temperance is happy about this arrangement. Why? Because as of late, there has been a little noticeable, if unspoken, shift in the way they feel about one another. Being forced together at social events would only increase the palpable tension between them.

Never in their wildest dreams would they have imagined those uneasy social engagements would lead to a forced marriage!

While I loved the first book in this series, I’m afraid Temperance and Gifford may have given Prudence and Johnnie a run for their money in this second installment of the ‘Scandalous Sisters’ series.

This is a charming story, which features two very likeable main characters, both of whom are under pressure to marry. Yet, they fight off the prospect of marriage as hard as they fight their attraction to one another. It was so much fun watching them fall in love, but there are a few darker tones in the story, as well.

A diabolical and spiteful plot is afoot which could force Temperance and Gifford to give up everything they hold dear. No only that, Temperance is harboring a painful secret, another reason why she would rather travel abroad and avoid marriage at all costs.

Justiss did a fantastic job with the construction of this novel. The character development and emotional depth are outstanding, as are the cleverly written plot twists. The pacing is very balanced, keeping the reader entertained from start to finish.

As always, the author stays true to the time period, and as always, I send my deepest thanks to JJ for sticking to a format so many have abandoned. Finding a pure Regency is not always easy.

However, readers should be aware this story is more than a ‘friends to lovers’ romance. However, the serious topics do not damper the lighter tones expected in a Regency romance. The idea that women were not as free to travel and see the world is also a stark reminder of the restrictions women were forced to adhere to, with little or no wiggle room.

Although Temperance’s life may have suddenly veered away from the path, she had so determinedly marched towards, with her delightfully unexpected happily ever after, she and her unburdened soul can now find peace and contentment no matter where she lands.

Temperance (Temper) Lattimar is too scandalous really because of her family. Lady Sayleford decides to sponsor her and allow her the season she has to have in order to fulfil her dream of releasing her dowry and travelling the world. In order to keep things above board Lady Sayleford recruits her godson to squire her around. He's the second son, an MP and aristocrat, Gifford Newell and a friend of her brother. The two of them embark on the social round and discover that really only one person is distracting them, each other. Then scandal forces them into a marriage of convenience and it gets complicated by both of their pasts.I liked the two of them and the tenderness Gifford gave after the marriage. It was sweet and gentle and lovely and the two characters seemed to be good foils for each other. Really enjoyed the read.
