I don't really know what else to say except...wtf ?

I had mixed feelings about this novel. On the one hand, I learned a lot about the daily micro-aggressions black women face in majority white workplaces and the sheer exhaustion it causes. Nella's inner monologue was eye-opening and Harris is a good writer who can depict with clarity what Black women deal with on a daily basis.

On the other hand, the ending. Oof. I'm so torn. Because the lovely ladies in my book club made some really great points about why the book ended the way it did. However, I can't get past the ick factor. There was just something really very wrong about the ending. Another reviewer put it this way (I'm paraphrasing): "this is a book written by a black woman about black women but it is not a book FOR black women."

I also thought there were too many plot holes and unanswered questions. Stuff just didn't make sense or have a point.

i don't even have the energy to explain how ridiculous this book was. it's just painfully ironic because the novel takes place in a publishing house but this book reads as if there was no editor present at all. so bad.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were strong and interesting, and the plot was intriguing.
The ending caught me off guard. It felt like some characters (Kendra Rae, specifically) were wildly underused in a way that caught me off guard. I wanted to know more about what happened, what's the backstory, and what happened next. I really didn't expect a The Ring style ending where the evil just perpetuated itself.

I did like the writing style. I liked the ending Epilogue but I thought there was still a lot left unexplored and unanswered in the main story.
