I wanted to like this so bad :( I loved the elements and I LOVED the mystery, but I felt like pacing was clunky and near-constant pop culture references were awkward for me. When I was in-step with the book, I thought it was an extremely fun read, but I felt like I fell out of that rhythm often.
Evil, surprising and different. But not so satisfying. Maybe should have been a two star. I so wanted to like this book more.

I really liked the plot concept and how deeply it goes into how it feels to be the only person of color at a workplace, along with how it feels to finally feel like you have another person of color there as your ally. However, I felt like way too much time was spent on setting up who Nella is and not enough time on Hazel and her group's plans--I wanted to know a lot more backstory and detail on how they got started, the choices they made, etc (trying to be vague to avoid ruining anything), not to mention more on Lynn and Shani and their counter moves. Keeping that in mind--really focusing on getting to know Nella--the ending was unexpected, abrupt, and pretty disappointing in my opinion. While I definitely don't need things wrapped up with a neat little bow or the good guys to always win, I wanted at least a little more explanation, instead of what just felt like a shrug and a "the cycle continues" message.
This was a fun and thought provoking read. I just wish the twist was more grounded? It lost me a little when the rest of the story felt so real. And the end made me so sad, like no Nella! You’re just going to give in? I want another book where she gets herself back, although I guess this is a thriller and not a fun fantasy novel.
Also the pink scars were never explained? Was that just only on Shani and mentioned so we’d know it was her?
I read an advance edition so idk how much, if any, of the writing was changed.

Airplane read at best. Thin plot, not intriguing, did not much care about the characters.

**Spoiler Alert**
This book was so disappointing! I still don't understand exactly what it was about. Hair grease as a social lubricant that completely changes someone's beliefs and personality?!
It started out very good! The main character was interesting ... the antagonist was interesting ... then things got overly complicated and bad. :(
