The mmc was a little too possessive for my liking but overall a cute story.

"Aurora was not rebellious by nature. It was simply that she was galvanized by the word no. The more she was told she could not do something, the more creative she became at conquering it".

I FINALLY picked up the final book in the Las Leonas series and oh my gosh it did not disappoint !!! I finished it and immediately want to start the series over. I miss every character already.

Aurora Montalban, like all the Leonas, is such a badass, so incredibly smart and caring, despite the way the world had treated her. She is probably one of my fave characters in the entire series. She’s an extremely confident and capable doctor (hot), a wonderful friend, and a fierce defender of women’s rights. She might come off as harsh to those who don’t know her but she is so sweet and loving to those who deserve her time and affection.  She works so hard to advocate for and provide care (especially reproductive) to the women of Paris, risking her own livelihood and safety at times. She doesn’t think she deserves love and happiness at times, and is in for an awakening when she meets her match, a man just as stubborn and headstrong as her, who sees every inch of  her and asks for more.

And Apollo, the man that he is, sees all of this incredible woman and is not intimidate or “threatened” by her, but rather so enamoured - despite what he tells everyone and himself at first. He gets verbally eviscerated (DESERVED!) by Aurora and little hearts form in his eyes and he asks he to do it again. I’ve never read a man quite so down bad and I loved every moment of it.

Beyond the romance (which was incredible), I absolutely loved the way this book has so much information about 19th century medical practices yet somehow was never dry or boring. It was so steeped in history and unflinchingly political in its content - about the importance of safe abortions and contraception for women then and now, the intersections of race, class, sexism, etc - particularly relevant today as it was then. Aurora is a Black Latina woman, a doctor, unmarried - all of which intersect and affect how those around her treat her, the opportunities presented to her, etc. It is the perfect example of why reading and historical romance books specifically are inherently political.

To say otherwise is to miss the entire point of books like this. I loved the authors note at the end where Herrera gives a lot more detail about the very real history and figures she drew from !

I also loved how the Leona’s, Evan and Cora appeared so much in this book - the dynamic between all these friends and their partners was so hilarious - they affectionately bully each other but at the end of the day are a family and so fiercely loyal. I love them all so much.

My only critiques are that I did notice the word “demented” was used quite a few times - usually to describe objects and not people. I know this might be a historically accurate term but it could have been replaced with something else. I also don’t love when authors refer to genitals in books as “their sex” but this is something I know is common in historical romances specifically.

I also did a tandem read of this with my physical copy and did notice that there were some inconsistencies with the audio which was a bit annoying

But wow overall, I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read whatever Hererra does next.
