I finished this out of spite, not interest, and by the time

Ballard dumps Ruth in the caves,

I was kinda rooting for the caves. Too much telling and a tepid central mystery that never felt like there was anything meaningful at stake. I know part of the problem is reading the last in a series but this was too much of a slog even adjusting for having to tie up loose ends.
