The Hannibal Lecter series gets better and better with each book. I really enjoyed the writing style. The characters felt complex and fleshed out and each one was unique from the others. I thought it was cool how there was different stories and pov's and how it all came together. I loved how much we got to see of Hannibal's thoughts and mind palace. Clarice Starling is a badass.
My biggest issue with this book is that I wish Clarice and Hannibal's relationship was given more time to develop.
There was one part at the end that really brought me out of it though.
Clarice and Hannibal are talking and she asks him if his mother breastfed him and more conversation ensues. The scene ends by Clarice bringing one of her breasts out and Hannibal puts his mouth on it. So yeah. Not the best reading experience.

Graphic: Gore, Torture, Grief, Cannibalism, Murder
Minor: Death of parent
2.5 stars. I went into this book with high expectations after reading Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs but ultimately it put me into a reading slump. I had hopes that the book may come around and maybe it was starting to pick up but it never did. I pushed through finishing it although I was tempted to DNF. It wasn't all bad, it did have some scenes in the book that were beautifully painted. It also contained some chilling scenes that I enjoyed reading. But, the last few chapters and the ending I believe to be done very wrong..

Well this book certainly goes through several different stages. It does it quite well for the majority of it. This book is not at all like the movie portrayal nor is it as shocking as the brain eating scene. For me its quite worse how nonchalant the ending is.
In any case this third book unlike the others is literally the downfall of Clarice and the psychological abyss of lecter. For Clarice it seems like she was going to be the underdog hero but unfortunately it took the turn for the worse. I can't figure out if it was lecter brainwashing or her character flaws and childhood trauma that lecter preyed on.... Which as a matter of fact Barney did allude to this. Dr lecter would either control Clarice and manipulate her or kill her. But it's not clear in the end who is doing what as lecter admits he can try to mold her but what she becomes is out of his hands. Maybe Clarice is far more dangerous than lecter.
As the first book the red dragon the agent who captured lecter in the first place had the same realization and actual fear of becoming what you hunt and that thin line between thinking like a serial killer and losing yourself to the madness..
In the end unlike the first book and the eventual death in both as a mentor/father figure and boss jack Crawford no longer sterling overseer like in the 2nd book falls to lecter's influence becoming like him instead of fighting against him as the enemy.
It's a really good book and the different stages are super well written and you get to see more if lecter's brilliance but insanity which is dangerous. It's a book full of betrayals greed and the breakdown of Sterling's world. The question is that left me wondering, is Sterling truely to surpass lecter or is she really brainwashed or a bit of both? Is Misha her ace in the hole over lecter like he used her father against her? What and how will it really end?
Certainly its a great read although the ending is quite unnerving for me as It does not fit Sterling's values even if shattered...

The character of Hannibal is so excellent I was compelled to read this book. It's a pretty good story but the ending was so absurd it ruined it for me. I thought the movie did a much better job of cutting out the unnecessary parts and providing the audience with a cohesive storyline.

Once again, Harris ups the ante and sees just how disturbing he can make Hannibal's choices and get away with it. Margot is very different in the book. Barney was an interesting character to bring in. Mason Verger still creeps me out. But I dunno, there was just something missing in this one. The twists feel more gruesome than clever and there's no sense of urgency with the hunt for the Lecter. Pacing, I think that was the big issue. I'll give the last book a try but, I'm gonna be honest, the show handled this plot way better than the book did.
