Damn. That was an extremely grounded creepy book. Perfect amount of true crime and author-as-the-first-person-perspective that it leaves you believing every word and feeling like you're there. Just....damn. Well done.

So good that I read it while walking through the airport

“I was there, I was a witness. And, somehow, the monster’s story became my own.”
I am not a true crime person. I do not like sensationalizing serial killers and giving them the notoriety that they crave. -this was the excuse I kept giving myself for not starting this book. I was a fool. I know Chizmar is an excellent writer and he knows how to tell a great story.
I was captivated right from the start. I was swept away into an idyllic hometown. I walked in Richard’s shoes and thought his thoughts. I felt his awkwardness when he saw the families of the victims and felt his excitement when they thought they might have caught a break.
I was completely enchanted with the strength of this town. The pictures of actual places throughout the book made it hard to believe that this was not a true story. Very well done

Had promise but ended up being a chore. It was said by many to feel as though it were true crime. It didn’t at all to me; I always knew I was reading fiction, and felt disappointed but wanted to finish.
A lot seemed unreal, particularly the narrators naïveté. 🙄

To be honest I was very bored within the first couple of hours reading this. I couldn’t tell you a single thing I remember since it was mainly about the author himself and while the background was fine it took up way to much of the story. It really started to pick up for me when it got into the telling of the boogeyman himself and his crimes. Is he human, or is he not, we don’t know. How was he able to do what he did? And for so long. But even then, while it was enough to keep me entertained for the last half the ending still fell flat for me. I think what lost me was there was no setup because it almost seemingly came out of nowhere. And while I don’t mind a good random shock/surprise from these kinds of mystery/thriller/horror books I was neither shocked nor surprised nor anything really. It didn’t do anything to make me feel like that was the twist or answer I was looking for.

I see a lot of people rating this as a 5 star idea, 2-3 star read execution and I do agree. I saw so many people hype this book up when it first came out and even reading some disappointing reviews I still wanted to give it a try but ultimately I for me it was a decent read but not an all time favourite sadly!

I’m sure people will want to execute me for this, but I read the first 30 pages and tapped out. Wasn’t in the mood to read that much about background info on the town growing up. Maybe I’ll revisit some day

I listened to this and enjoyed the narration.. Kept forgetting it was fiction , so I think that's the sign of a well written book.. I loved the 80's feel I got from this and the small town vibes!!
