This was a solid read. I love that Kat was a fellow book lover. The banter between Kat and Daemon was so fun to read! Also, I loved the friendship between Dee and Kat. This book was the perfect blend of high school drama and sci-fi. It reminded me of the show Roswell.

I'm just gonna try to keep this as short as fair as possible (it might not be) because I'm reading the next book and it is testing my patience. I have never been a very patient person.
Rating this book was really hard. It has many negatives but it has positives as well. First the negatives.

1. The story is way too slow. Honestly, the first 15 chapters can easily be sqeezed into one. At one point, I wanted to put it on indefinite hold but since I already have 3 books on hold, I decided to continue.

2. I didn't like the characters: Daemon was okay but nothing special. He was a total ass but it would have been understandable if we'd gotten the explanation we deserved! Which, we didn't.

Katy is just so annoying. It's like most of the stuff she does is just to prove that she's a big girl capable of making decisions. It was truly infuriating at points.

Dee: When she was first intoduced, I hated her. She was this overly bubbly person forced into the storyline for no reason other than to fuck with the reader. It got better as the story progressed but not by much. She's still not my favourite character but her presence doesn't make me cringe so I guess that's good.

And that's about it. The others characters are just... there. Because the only other way to write a book with three chacaters is to lock them up some place, or to have a post-apocalyptic thing with only three survivors.

3. The cliche parts: I will just give an example. There was a scene in which Daemon and Katy were going to just about to kiss. Another second, and they would have. But then Dee called and they had to break apart. The amount of times I have had to put up with shit like that...

4: The story was nothing to rave about. There was a story and it was kinda good. Interesting even. But there wasn't much of it there. I blame the first half of the book which was an absolute waste.

5. Some things didn't add up.
Spoiler If they can travel with the speed of light. Why did it take so long for them to reach Katy in the end. They could have gotten there in a second considering light travels at 300 million metres per second. Someone didn't pay much attention in physics class.

I can't think of any positives. Like I said, I'm reading the next book and IT IS SCRAMBLING MY BRAIN! I'll write some good things if I remember. The only reason for the 3 stars is that the writing got a lot better and the story was ineteresting. That's all. And I am very disappointed because I was really excited about this book...

I really enjoyed this book.

I was watching BookTubers talk about it and suggest it, so i thought I'd give it a try. I can see how people would compare this to Twilight because the plot is very similar... I know this won't make much sense, but the book, while very similar to Twilight, the idea of the characters in the story is very original. I mean aliens? Come on.

This book did have a lot of characters that did remind me of Twilight characters (despite the previous statement)... the similarities between some of the characters is crazy... but the characters are the ones we love and want to see again and again.

Recommended. Fun read, very enjoyable.

Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout

So I own almost all of JLA’s books but I’m embarrassed to say this is the first one I have actually read. 😅 I’m really glad I did read this one though because oh my goodness what an amazing story! This book absolutely blew my mind and I am so excited to get the new redesigned hard cover!

Did I read any reviews prior? No.
Did I read the description? No… 😅
Did I see everywhere that this book was a 5 star must read?! Yes I did.
Did I spend the first half the book guessing what Daemon could possibly be because I intentionally went in 100% blind? Yes and it was so worth it.

This book was such a fun change from the typical vampire, fae or werewolf fantasy books about. I am so angry at myself for waiting this long to really jump on this book. Thank you Entangled Publishing for the push.

This book has it all!
-Boy next door
-Touch her and die /who did this to you
-Found family
-Banter
-Slow burn
-Strangers to enemies to frenemies to friends to enemies to lovers? Oh and back to enemies!

Katy is the new girl in town, after moving to the middle of nowhere West Virginia from Florida she finds her new home is not all what it seems. Katy likes to read books which relates to us bookworms on a whole new level, she blogs about her reading and she gardens. With a town so small there isn’t really much all to do. Katy mom works a lot, picking up shifts to keep herself busy since the loss of her husband she just needs to always be doing something.

The locals are nice but there is just something off about the town. She has only one neighbor; the Black’s who are twins Dee and Daemon. Teens her age who live alone due to parents who work out of town. Dee is a very sweet and just wants to be friends with Katy unlike her twin Daemon who is anything but sweet. Daemon spends his time avoiding Katy (or as he called her… Kitten) or being a grade a douche bag to her. He has major ‘treat her mean to keep her keen vibes’

I’m ready to binge read the rest of the series.

First in the Lux science fiction romance series for young adults about the clash between a group of alien teens and a newcomer to the school. Set in Ketterman, West Virginia.

My Take
Why do parents do this? It's been three years since her husband died and mom suddenly gets this bug up her butt to drag her daughter off to the back of beyond in her senior year? Although, I do have to admit that it doesn't seem as though Katy is all that broken up about leaving her old high school.

I get why Dee, Daemon, and their clique avoid the townspeople. I don't get why the townspeople react so nastily to them. Do they smell bad? Did they take out an ad in the paper? If they all toned down their reactions, they'd pass a whole lot easier. I'm rather irritated with how obvious Armentrout makes her protagonists, which makes me want to rate it at "3", but then again she's created something different and I want to up it. And at least it got proofread! But then that whole too-obvious vibe hits again...

Daemon is such a hot-cold, immature jerk. What is with all that pencil poking? He's the one who keeps saying he doesn't want to know her. I was irritated with Katy's own hot-cold reactions, but I do realize they were very real emotions.

Mmmm, I am envious of their metabolisms. Aren't doctors generally addressed as "Dr." instead of "Mr."? Or am I wrong in thinking Michaels is a doctor? Maybe he's a nurse.

I do like this series. Of course I'd like it better if Armentrout had tried for some subtlety, but I guess she was in a hurry.

The Story
It's all the little things about moving into a new town. Find the grocery store, get a library card, buy some plants to spruce up the flower beds. Meet the neighbors. Only these are some really odd neighbors. Their parents are never around and Dee is practically a poster child for ADD and her need to be friends with Katy. While Daemon. Well, let's just say that he can switch from nice to vicious in the blink of an eye.

The trouble is Daemon is so hot and Katy is so attracted in spite of her desire not to be. Life just gets more complicated with Daemon and Dee's closest friends' reactions to Katy.

Between them all, it's just too confusing.

The Characters
Katy Swartz is starting her senior year far from her home state of Florida with its beaches and her friends. She's a pretty self-reliant girl carrying a 4.0 average and loves to read, posting book reviews about what she's read. I do like this girl! Mom is Kellie Swartz and she works as a nurse at a nearby hospital. She used to be more of a homebody but with her dad's death, mom does anything to not be home. Dr. Michaels works at the same hospital.

Daemon and Dee Black are twins, Dawson is their dead third, and in Katy's year at school. Dee is way friendly and Daemon is the complete opposite. Nor does he pass up an opportunity to insult or denigrate Katy. Matthew Garrison is the school biology teacher. Ash is one of a set of triplets with Andrew and Adam Thompson. She used to be Daemon's girlfriend and, hoo-boy, is she nasty! The whole group are aliens, Luxen, with various powers and no one can know who they are. Between their enemies, the Arum, and the Department of Defense, anyone who learns about them will be in deep, life-altering trouble.

Lesa and Carissa are human students and friendly with Katy. Simon is on the football team and makes a move on Katy.

The Arum are "children of the shadows". They do their best to find Luxen and absorb their powers, killing them. Baruck and Sarafeth are two of the four Arum who attack Daemon and Katy.

The Cover
The cover is shades of black with a flash of white lightning over the pond where Daemon takes Katy for a swim and the flesh tone of Katy's arms wrapped around Daemon.

The title refers to a weakness, for Obsidian can kill.

I read this with the Entangled Insiders and I really enjoyed this book! It was fun to read along with everyone and to talk about this book.

I was intrigued with this book from the start and from Katy’s and Daemon’s first interaction. You knew something was up with him but needed to continue with the story to figure it out. Deamon is the hot next door neighbor with secrets that you want to find out. The heat and intensity between him and Katy was perfect. Their love/hate relationship was everything.

I loved Katy’s and Dee’s friendship and that they look out for each other. Dee took a liking to Katy right away when she was the new kid in town and made friends with her even when she probably shouldn’t have. Once all the secrets come out, I’m glad that Katy still remade friends with Dee.

Can’t wait to read book 2!

Thank you Entangled and NetGalley for a copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.

Such a fun high school book. If you enjoyed Twilight or Vampire Diaries this is a book for you. It has a broody MMC, the "weak," independent FMC. Great banter between the Daemon and Katy. Katy and Dee have a great friendship. It's full of twist and turns and fast paced story. It's engaging, quarky at times and the story is constantly moving. Absolutely enjoyed this so much.

Can Aliens be sexy ?
Oh my, thanks to several reviewers, I rushed to get this book. I thought I left the roaring raging teenage hormones behind a few years ago. (yes a few, shhh now) I was so.. totally getting that tingly feeling and screaming for them just to get naked "NOW" Come on, geesh really what if you died tomorrow, DO IT ! but no, this was not to be the typical YA romance, no, these characters used their brains not just their zippers. Once I got over my cheap exceptions of what should be, I realized (shocked) there was a story and it was interesting. I hated, liked, lusted and loved it. I finished it on one sitting, I sat inside while everyone else went out to enjoy the day so I could get more in. Then ***Smack** right across my behind, CLIFFHANGER. grumble, grumble.....When is the next book being released .
