I enjoyed this, but not as much as TJR's other books, because of the pacing. I liked the main characters and rooted for them for every page of the love story but ultimately would have wanted to see more thrilling plot and less low-stakes interpersonal drama.

Atmosphere was not a page-turner until the last chapter. The book is dual-narrative, switching between (1) the action-packed hours of a thrilling, high-stakes space mission gone horrifically sideways and (2) the years-long and slow-paced story of how Joan fell in love with Vanessa and their time at NASA in the '80s training to be some of the US's first female astronauts. As the pacing of these two sections is very different and the scenes from section 1 were few and far between, given that they only span a few hours while the other section spans 7 years, the book was interesting but not edge-of-your-seat addictive like TJR's other books until the end.

The stakes just didn't feel very high for the majority of the book, as the interpersonal stakes were nothing in comparison to the space mission, and there wasn't a plot or mystery other than the mission. As for the mission itself, it wasn't as thrilling as it could have been, because some of the most heart-wrenching parts of it were way too early in the story for me to know or care about the characters yet. By the time I'd truly fallen for them, there was only one chapter of the mission left.

If you're a TJR fan and/or thought this looked interesting, it's worth a read! Just go in expecting something a bit slower and less plot-driven than TJR's usual fare.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The last quarter completely won me over. I loved Joan’s character arc and her relationship with Frances, and the ending made me cry. The first half dragged for me. I kept waiting for the plot to pick up, and it just didn’t grab me right away. Some of the dialogue between Joan and Vanessa also felt kind of cheesy and unrealistic like people don’t really talk like that. And I have to say, I could not stand Barbara’s character!! every scene with her just frustrated me.

TJR has a way of making me obsessed with things I never cared to learn about before. Tennis? And now space? Sign me up. This one RIPPED MY HEART OUT.

Really loved this one. Really compelling female astronauts and space missions.
