This is my first older woman x younger man book - it's definitely not my usual preference. But the premise as described in the last book utterly enthralled me. And coming out of this book, I have to say I am thoroughly shocked and thrilled that I gave this book a chance.
It feels like something important. It feels like WAY more than just a smutty feel-good erotica novel. The way the love story evolves in tandem with Aida's documentary felt natural--but it was the documentary and Aida's unfurling directly into the unhinged kinky goddess that really grabbed me. It was the massive amounts of communication to make sure both Cal and Aida were always on the same page that blew me away.
The way Aida's putting herself and her personal journey out into the open for other women her age who may feel repressed and unsatisfied with their own sexualities felt ... monumental. It felt like I was being given lessons or something, lol.
This series began as a hot and steamy but ultimately average series. But the topics it brings up are so, SO poignant that even when they're not being delved in to or explored properly (book 2, I'm looking at you) they give the whole series a gravitas that makes this series feel... I don't know. Essential?
The way sex is portrayed in these books, the way women of all ages and shapes and walks of life are worshipped and praised - both in the bedroom and out of it - I can't tell y'all how important it feels to read these books.
Elodie Hart's writing is beautiful. It's mature, sexy, and definitely tugs on the heart strings from time to time. She doesn't feel the need to follow the cliched romance novel structure either. There were moments in this book where I was going "oh no here it comes, shit's gonna come crashing down around them" because in any other book there'd be drama for drama's sake alone.
But Hart doesn't do that. She allows scenes to play out in a realistic way that makes the characters feel warm and weighted--human, rather than caricatures. There's no breakup--just challenges that actual adult humans would have to work out and overcome.
I didn't think it would get better after Gen and Anton's book--but this one takes the cake by far. It's perfection on ALL fronts. The characters, the sex, the communication, the plot (as in the documentary), the messaging and the writing. I so rarely bother to give erotic novels much thought, but this one's surpassed expectations in such a phenomenal way I have no other choice but to give this 5 stars.
