This was my first time reading David Weber and was a little underwhelmed. This is not a knock on his writing, but his attention to his minute attention to the smallest detail. I have read Tom Clancy in the past so know how an author can get lost in detail and inner monologue. By the end of the book, I was hooked on the action that comes towards the end of the book.
I am going to go for the next book in the series to determine if I continue going forwards with this series. Overall this book let me down, but by the end gave me some hope for the series.

I kept hearing glowing reviews from sci-fi fans about this series, and since the first two books were available for free in ebook format, thought I'd give them a shot. This first novel is an excellent foray into the modern space-opera genre, and after about 1/3 of the way through the book, I was hooked. There were a couple things I thought were a little hokey, but understood later why Weber introduced them. Overall, left me wanting to read more of the Honor Harrington series, and if the 2nd book is as good or better than the first, I'll most likely be purchasing most of the rest of the series (I think Weber is up to 12 books in the series so far?) in one fell swoop.
This book was an ok military science fiction novel. I'd rate it higher except for a few things:
1) Info dumps, oh god, the info dumps.
2) I never felt like the protagonist (or her cat) was in danger of failing
3) There was only one character, everyone else was a paper thin figure (no insult meant to paper) who said a few lines and might or might not die, with me having as little emotional response as if someone crumpled up a piece of paper.
4) Dialog. The lack of characters made the dialog very impersonal and not that entertaining to read.
5) Physics. He actually got some of the basic physics wrong, which just isn't right in this kind of book. Example. Two vessels were moving near each other. It is said in the book that one space ship had more velocity than the other. This is of course absurd because in such a situation only relative velocity matters. (or really, all situations I can think of)
So Why did I give it any stars at all? Well, I did finish it, so that's worth 2 stars. An, if bored, I might read farther on in the series, but I feel no compulsion to do so unless someone were to assure me that book 2 were 10 times better in all ways. The pacing was good enough, if you forget the info dumps.
