Very creepy and interesting story. Unfortunately, as with many otherwise enjoyable middle grade novels, this one has some extremely gross fatphobia through it.

So good and spooky. I’m a big fan of Claire Legrand and I wanna read all of her works. I didn’t know this was her debut until after I finished. This didn’t feel like a debut it was very well written, the exact level of spookiness for a YA, and it wasn’t super predictable.
I can’t think of a better way to spend the days leading up to Halloween than with The Cavendish Home For Boys and Girls by Claire Legrand. It was a spooky and delightful treat. I’m pretty choosy about middle grade reads. I’m thrilled that I picked this one up because it was so entertaining.
Victoria was a lovely no nonsense main character. She was a perfectionist of the highest order. I wasn’t sure if I would like her at first, but as her search for Lawrence continued I found myself enjoying her attitude quite a lot. I adored her turmoil over her B in music class. Victoria was really well done.
The story was also fantastic. All the grownups seem to be slowly morphing into…something else. Children are missing. There’s roaches everywhere–even on the pages! It was creepy and totally unpredictable.
The Cavendish Home For Boys and Girls was a charming and dark little book. I adored it a 25 and I would have adored it at 12 as well. If you’re looking for a fun new middle grade read I highly recommend this one.

This was a delightfully dark, creepy middle grade. I really liked the MC Victoria - a girl who is smart and determined but sometimes not always likable. I thought her growth & character arc was commendable and I like to think about a younger audience reading about a girl like her. I also liked Lawrence, and their friendship.
The premise for the book was also intriguing. It got a little wacky and confusing, especially inside the Cavendish house itself, but the scary factor was well written. I hate roaches, and this book fed upon that innate fear of mine, and then some.
Not only was the book properly twisted and eerie, but the themes and messages laced beneath it all were important. I’d highly recommend this middle grade book to all audiences, though not for the faint of heart.
