The book was really fun to read as a teenager. It's meant for kids around 7th grade, but like I said, it's a really wonderful book for anyone older than that too. Because there were a couple of jokes that would soar over normal kids' heads but are a little insensitive, I couldn't give it a five-star rating. However, the story, though predictable, was sweet and taught a good lesson of not judging a person by their looks. Spoiler alert! The person that Alice HATES in the beginning of the book becomes the person that she does not want to leave, and as for the person she LOVES, she turns out to not be very kind.
In the end, I will be reading most of the rest of the series, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 13.

The trials and tribulations of being a pre-teen. Alice dwells so much on her awkward moments it became slightly uncomfortable. Overall it was a pretty good story though.

I love Alice haha it’s been too long since I read this series and idk it just came to mind and I really wanted to re read it bc it was one of my firsts and favorites as a kid in terms of “romance”.

I started it thinking it would read super out dates and I wouldn’t actually like it but WOW this book is basically timeless??? The growth around Mrs. Plotkin was amazing. It sucked that Mrs. Plotkin was written so from such a negative point of view but I think Alice’s perception was overall accurate based off how society expect women to look.

I remember reading this series as a kid, but didn’t recall any of the plot. The story holds up really well. The only dated thing that stuck out to me was Alice’s brother having a beer at 18.

Overall, this is a very nicely done portrait of a young girl navigating a new school and growing up. Alice finds herself longing for the pretty sixth-grade teacher, but ultimately finds a kinship with her own teacher - less conventionally beautiful but with more substance. Alice also grows into herself, gets to take an adventure, and makes some friends.

I've heard really good things about Naylor's Alice series, so I thought I would check it out. I really liked this first one, which starts with Alice in the sixth grade. The book opens with her cataloging her lifetime of embarrassments - hee!

I can't believe I didn't read these as a kid.
