So many reasons for 5 stars here - first of all, POC. Working mom. Single working mom? Learning how to regulate and accept emotions and not ideal situations. Mom actually not holding in emotions but letting the child know that they are disappointed and upset. Unique and beautiful illustrations. Loved this one. We read this one as a Wonderbook from the library.
I absolutely love this children’s book, about a little girl and her mother enjoying their Saturday together. The book opens up with us signing out at the Mom works Monday through Friday and I think it said Sundays as well. But Saturdays were designated for mom and daughter to have a mommy daughter day, they rode the bus, they got their hair done, They went to the library. And all of these obstacles keep jumping in their way however they are still positive throughout the day because they are together. It’s so beautifully written and the illustration is top-tier. Definitely a good recommend for all the little black girls .
I adore SATURDAY so much! Right off the bat, this book follows an endearing mother-daughter duo who keep encountering mischievous mishaps for the one day of the week where they're free to spend much-treasured time with each other. Oge Mora incorporates heart-charged showing vs. telling, arc-moving and character-building repeated phrasing, and energetic, plucky pacing in sync with her brilliant illustrations. With notes touching on mother-daughter bonding, cherished time together, disappointments, frustrating moments, and emotions shared by adults and kids, this is a very fun and life-affirming read.
Gorgeous story about learning to deal with disappointed and enjoying your life (especially those extra special moments) in spite of it.
A meditation on ones expectations, and how you deal when things don't go the way you planned/expected (and how you can help others deal).

I like the artwork; I like the theme of disappointment; and I liked that even mom gets frustrated.
A celebration of a day together, even though it doesn't go as planned. The collage illustrations are bright and cheerful and full of texture and depth. The text bursts with onomatopoeic moments: much like [b:Thank You, Omu!|34642482|Thank You, Omu!|Oge Mora|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1518363514l/34642482._SX50_.jpg|55803453] with its repeated "knock, knocks" this has several "zooooms" as Ava and her mother dash about town.
I think my favorite part isthe end.
Read again, with my four-year-old. Cried at the simple outings that were planned and how with each defeat, Ava and her mother manage to rally. In the face of so many disappointments and canceled plans over the last 6 months of pandemic, this one was a close hit to home. But also an especially worthy lesson.
