Here are my ramblings for From the Jump:

The Pros:
*The writing itself is spectacular. It flows really well between now and then with the story taking place in mostly the now.
* I love the message of “you don’t have to be perfect”. Just be you.
* It’s a slow burn, friends to lovers.
* Deiss had to grow on me. I could see that he cared for Liv but I questioned him a lot. I am super grateful the author clears some of my misgivings up later on in the story. I also kinda dig that he had to grow on me. It was refreshing.
* If I ever have a cat, I want the cat to be just like Cat Stevens

The Cons:
* I am not a fan of Simone….at all.
* The story ends too quickly. All is forgiven so fast and in reality, things do not work out that way. It takes time to get over that kind of betrayal.
* The friends group is problematic.. None of them want to appear vulnerable with each other but vulnerability is a big part of friendship. They have a surface level friendship. Each character is afraid to share things about themselves because they are afraid they will not be accepted. I don’t think it ever gets resolved really. The characters are only vulnerable with their love interests (thank goodness for that).
* The cover doesn’t match the story although it is gorgeous.

Pros and Cons aside, I would definitely recommend it for others to read.

Thanks for you for the advance copy!! All opinions are my own.

If Lacie Waldon writes it, I will read it!!

The chemistry between the characters she writes hits every time!

Lacie Waldon has done it again in this 5-star book! This is the best rom-com book I have read all year ( and I read many of them, lol). What makes this book stand out is that the book's focus was on Liv and Deiss's story, and there wasn't a ton of side plot. Of course, side characters are beautifully written and add to the banter, but they do not overshadow the story. The only negative comment is that Olivia's past could have been explained a little more initially. But, again, this was not a huge issue for me, as I will be rereading this one until I have memorized the words.

Thank you, Penguin Group Putnam, for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.

Book Review: From the Jump by Lacie Waldon

From the Jump is an adult contemporary romance about a rule follower that decides to start saying “no”, taking more risks and ends up falling for her friend.

Liv Bakersfield (note: not one of my favorite romance character names) is fed up with the uninspiring graphic design jobs given to her by her firm when she impulsively says “no” to a bone broth campaign. She is promptly put on leave by her boss to work on her “personal issues” but she spontaneously decides to join her college friends on their trip to South Africa instead. Once there she finds herself in close quarters with Lucas Deiss her attractive but emotionally distant friend of over a decade. In both South Africa and back at home Liv will be forced out of her comfort zone and into breaking some of her own self-imposed rules all the while falling for a man that she never considered a possibility.

I really enjoyed this novel about a woman taking risks in her life with both career and love. Lucas was a dreamy male main character that was aloof without being mean or emotionally stunted. I appreciated how their childhoods caused them both to play it safe in their lives but still left space to fall in love with a friend they knew and trusted.

3.5 | mostly fun, happy and fast-paced friends to lovers rom-com (triggers: body image, negative self-talk, disordered eating)

3.9 stars. What a lovely beach ready book. I enjoyed learning about their friend group although I thought the pack was a tad much. Simone had a little tooo strong of opinions about some relationships and was my least favorite friends. I feel like some storylines and things didn’t really get worked out but I honestly didn’t mind. I was really just here for the friends to lovers trope and the author did it well!

this actually may be my favorite friends to lovers book! there’s a plot beyond the trope, and i really love how she sets up each friend. it’s like sally rooney, with a more optimistic tone.
