reviewing all five of these at once very belatedly. this gets a LOT of points for being soooo snappy and concise by comparison and certainly not the worst in terms of hating women

Slightly addicted to this series now have just bought the new one and can't wait to start it. Definitely helped the book by seeing the tv series beforehand otherwise I would have got really confused with the characters.

My original rating was 3 stars and it's gonna stay 3 stars this time too. Honestly, I'm glad I reread this when we're in a place in time that's so far removed from when the tv series was still being released.
Sean Bean was perhaps the poorest casting choice for Ned bc Sean Bean's almost nostalgic reputation as an actor, I feel, made people glom onto Ned and shape him to be some sort of martyr in the series, which he's not. In the book Ned is just stupid *snorts* and he's a really bad politician. Literally nO ONE in this knows what the heck they're doing, but for some reason they're the people in power -- which I guess isn't too far removed from modern day politicians, but it was still annoying nonetheless.
I don't want to beat the dead horse any further bc I know practically everyone has had their say about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the utter ridiculousness that is GRRM's narrative decisions, but overall, I think this is still funand I'm also going to be reading book 2 bc I hate myself akjsdnakjdbsjakb

Wow! I love stories that I can follow through several other books. Watching characters grow and others come and go is thrilling. Luv it!
I want to give this book four stars because it was an engaging, fun read. The book has solid and compelling fantasy characters. However, Martin was just a little too free with his depictions of sexualized violence. Occasionally those scenes have a narrative benefit, but I think Martin's use and descriptions of sex and rape is over the top. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a repressed fourteen-year-old's dream diary. Ew. I am still deciding if these scenes are off-putting enough to keep my from reading the next book.
