Good lord this author can write - I had previously read the first book in her series and likewise gave it 5⭐️, but to write a sci-fi of such quality and impact as this in only 135 pages is phenomenal. The story follows 4 scientists who are sent on a mission in space to visit 4 planets capable of supporting life. They leave earth knowing that they will be gone for 80 years, leaving behind family and loved ones, and travelling into the unknown. Then part way through their mission Earth stops responding.

Unlike most sci-fi, and much like her other series, this book is not action packed, there is no disaster story, they are not attacked by aliens or have to fight for their lives. This is entirely a character driven story about the relationship between the scientists, and about humanity in general. This is a book that I can see myself re-reading over and over again and getting more from it each time. Even if you don’t read a lot of science fiction I cannot recommend this enough.

A wonderful little first contact story. With Becky Chambers' usual charm and soft humour sprinkled everywhere. Some wonderful thoughts about the ethics of first contact. Sweet, but not saccharine.

I can't believe I didn't reviewed this the first time.

I love Becky Chambers, and everythign she writes, but I do a special place in my heart for this gentle and beautiful ode to exploration. Few books make me want to step foot on an alien planet more than this little novella full of hope and challenge.
