To really cute story, good, laughs along the way, the smut decent, there are some different kinks I don’t find in a lot of books

I have SO MANY mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I had a fantastic time reading it, and I will probably read the rest of whatever ends up being published in this series (at the date of this review there are no other books in the series yet). On the other hand, the quality of this book is, at best, EXTREMELY questionable.

The characters in this book absolutely shine! They are dynamic and interesting. Every single character, down to the smallest side character, has clear motivations for their actions. It takes a while to understand all of the characters, but every last one is multifaceted and rich with personality. That said, the vibrancy of the characters doesn’t always correlate with their actions. Several times in the book characters contradict themselves with their actions, in a way that usually seems to be a result of poor plot planning.

The world-building is likewise incredible! There is a very rich, fun, and vibrant history explored in the book. Genuinely, the world-building was my favorite part of this book. That said, the world-building is absolutely riddled with inconsistencies that lead to a multitude of plot holes. All of these plot holes are incredibly minor and don’t detract much from the overall story, but they definitely exist.

Some great imagery of the caverns where the orcs live and the Highlands. I liked the general premise of the book and how the Highlanders and the orcs needed each other without realising it. Lots of miscommunication in this which was frustrating at times.

It felt like it took some time to get going, even though some action started straight away. Once it got going it was good. I liked the relationship building between Fiona and all of the different orcs and I liked the history of the Goddess Diana, that was interesting.

But, once they started to have sex, it really felt like everything they did lead to them having sex. Literally, every little thing. It felt like it lost some of its effect by the end because you knew what was going to happen and how it was going to happen. Also some of the language choice around this, like why would a grown woman call it a 'willy' was beyond me.

An easy and fairly enjoyable read. Sweet ending though.

This is a great read. Orcs raid human villages before winter for food. As a result the humans die of starvation over winter which is why humans detest orcs. During a raid our FMC turns orc’s blade on him and draws blood inadvertently proposing to him in the old way. I like the “mistaken proposal” beginning to their relationship but I LOVE the paradox presented with regards to the human-orc dynamic. We learn why they raid, they learn the consequences of the raids, and we see the conundrum our FMC is determined to solve.

The attention to detail is fantastic. The world building and cultural elements really allow you to immerse yourself. It is very sex positive. Unmated orcs are promiscuous, polyamorous, exhibitionists, and voyeuristic. There’s an intimate moment between Ean and Fiona told from his pov when he teaches her how to self pleasure for her first O because it is hers alone to experience for the first time.

I would have preferred descriptions of clothing and interiors edited down as they are a bit verbose for my personal taste but it’s such a great, unique story that I was able to overlook it. It’s definitely worth the read and I’m definitely interested in the next installment.
