important read for all

This works illustrates just how powerful a mother’s love and strength can be. These strong, determined women overcame so many obstacles and were able to instill hope and determination in their children. Although one can appreciate how important the message in this work is, I found the writing disjointed and repetitive in parts.

I was struck by many things as I read this book about the mothers of 3 famous yet very different men. The violence directed towards the families shocked me. All 3 of the men experienced hate (houses fire bombed etc) while they were still boys. So unjust. Life was hard!!!!

All of these moms were activists. All of these women placed a high value on education. All of these men were brilliant. The stories were fascinating.

I only gave this 4 stars because I found the back and forth between the women and their historical time and their famous sons was just a bit too scattered for me. Also, most of the book was about the events surrounding the women and not a lot about them. So that was a bit disappointing to me.

I learned alot of things about Mrs Little Mrs King and Mrs Baldwin I didn't know and more about the time period

5 for content, 3 for writing/audio book performance.

Far too often, history is written about men, by men. This book is remarkable in so many ways - add it to your reading list.
informative

The beginning and the ending spell out the author’s personal story (new black mother) and its connection to this project, but also broadens the mission - to recognize three black women who raised three of the most important American black men of all time. As a mother to a young black boy I feel deeply connected to this mission as well.

The background story of these mothers is so essential into understanding their sons as whole persons. Sons that had real mothers. Mothers that have influenced their children and have helped them become the men that have changed our history and have ultimately changed us.

Tubbs takes on the seemingly erased stories of the mother’s of the three of the most influential black men of the 1950’s, 1960s and Civil Rights movement. In uncovering their stories, Tubbs provides three unique experiences of black life in America. She describes the tropes and stereotypes black women find themselves being compared to in history and today; illustrating how these women dispelled most of what America thinks they know about black women and black mothers. As a black woman and mother I think the book is quite relatable, however it does get a little preachy. Overall, Tubbs does provide an accurate and interesting history lesson of the African American experience.
