I think the author did a great job telling the story of Berdis, Alberta, and Louise. She didn't have a lot to work with because unfortunately not a lot has been documented about these women but you could tell the author really cared about telling their stories with dignity and respect. I think this was a valiant effort to bring these women out of the footnotes of their famous sons' histories.

A really important read - by knowing more about these three mothers, you come to understand their three sons more and how those men became the immortal figures they are today. Commendation given where commendation is due.

I was so excited to read and get to know the stories of these mothers who shaped these three great men. While I did learn a lot more about James Baldwin, Malcolm X, and MLK, it fell short in giving enough voice to these women. We don't read ANY of their words, and too much of the commentary about their reaction to different life events feels like conjecture. I don't know what I expected- I mean, none of these women are around to be interviewed, and since they hadn't really been given much attention through their lives, it's not like the author can just take from things that aren't there. However, I do like the context that the author provides about Black history from the different times and places of each of their lives, and it does give some insight into how these men got the ideas and characteristics that grew them into such great leaders.
just need to restart this at a moment when i have more free time!
Great book! What a topic to focus on the mothers behind the sons. How their influence and nurture was able to develop leaders for the movement in justice. How they were involved in the work themselves.

My hope is not only that everyone will read this incredible book, but that this book becomes a (book and documentary) series and/or film. Such a robust experience. I couldn’t wait to pick the book up each time I returned to reading it. So many gems…so, so many interesting details…even a connection between Malcolm X’s parents and my hometown, Montréal! Also, so many heart-wrenching, grief-evoking moments. Still, a lens focusing less on the evil that exists in the world, more on the complex beauty of purpose-filled leadership, connection, and love. I’ll read this again…and again.
