This book truly humanized not just three great heroes of the civil rights movement, but their families and particularly the women they left behind after their tragic deaths. It is not a light or easy read buy it is certainly worthwhile.

Expanding on a doctoral dissertation on Black mothers, this book explores how Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X and James Baldwin were influenced by the experiences, fears and teachings of their mothers. The stories are expertly told and held my attention throughout the book.
The tone of the book is deeply affected by the experiences, fears and expectations of the author as a new Black mother. She admits to speculating on several issues as there was a regrettable dearth of direct information available; however, her speculations ring true to me.
Overall, I think it is a great read.
