House of Earth and Blood sometimes feels more like a mystery/detective store than a fantasy saga. I’m not used to modern urban fantasy with cell phones, surveillance footage and helicopters, but I didn’t dislike it!
Our FMC Bryce is absolutely fierce. I love her and the cast of characters here. After an awful tragedy involving Bryce’s friends, she is left to cope with the trauma and pulls away from friends and family. It’s not until new evidence in her friends’ case is found, and the beautiful investigator Hunt Athalar, that she starts to come back to life.
While I wouldn’t say this is my favorite SJM book because it felt like it took so long to get to the action, I did really enjoy this. As always, SJM picks up the pace towards the end with a crazy twist and loads of action. I was crying (in public) and wishing it wouldn’t end!

the first bit is a little slow going but as a whole the book rips out your heart in the best way possible
Graphic: Murder, Blood, Death, Grief, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Abandonment
Minor: Suicide and Animal cruelty
